Radeon HD 5870 and Skyrim

I was debating whether to ask this in the GPU section or the Games section, but I decided to ask here.

Can I play Skyrim at high/ultra at 1920x1080 on an HD 5870 1GB? I might be getting the game soon after having seen some good reviews.

My other system specs are in my sig.

Yeah sure. I run it at high on my 3870 at 1080p with a steady frame rate so you should run it with ease.

Thanks for asking this question, I will be upgrading my system in july, with a i3 2100 from Aastii & a card around that performance, and I was interested in the same question!

:)

My 5770 with an overclock runs it maxxed minus a few settings down a notch at 1600 x 900. I think the 5870 is twice the power of that so you should be fine.

I have the HD texture pack too but I don't know if it taxes your system all that much.

Np Jason :D

Just tried and I even play it on ultra :3 Even happier :P
Sounds good Michael. :)

You should go for a 5870! :) I got mine for £100 from eBay and eBay always seems to be littered with cheap 5870s. They rarely sell for more than £100. For the price, a used 5870 is probably about as good as it gets.

Yeah going by all the other posts in this thread, I think I should be OK - especially if you can play it on a 5770 (if at a slightly lower resolution).

I agree with Jason, the 5870 is good and awesome.

I don't think the HD Texture pack does much more on the GPU maybe that 5% or so extra performance is kicked in, not 100% sure though

With my i3 and a 560 Ti, which is just above a 5870, I am able to play at ultra settings, full AA, full everything @ 1920x1080, constant 60FPS cap, so to OP and to you - it will play great :D

Same here for me as Aastii said, My 560 ti and 2500k play it all on ultra with the high res texture pack and 1920x1080p! I very rarely dip below 60 fps, only when there are dragons, dragon priests and im casting fireballs everywhere do i rarely notice a drop. (Its capped at 60 fps if you didnt know :D)

Its a great game you MUST get it, gameplay never really ends, several main storylines, side quests miscellanous quests and your own fun!

Great game with DLC to come!

The 5870 and 560 Ti are pretty close in performance, with the 5870 coming out as the stronger performer in some games and the 560 Ti coming out as the stronger performer in others (see here http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/511?vs=547). :D

To be honest, if you can max it out on a 560 Ti or a 5870, IDK why people are saying "you need such a powerful system to max it!" etc etc... :/ oh well.

Awesome. Thanks for the info Russ! Can't wait to get it, man I really want it! :D

I'm playing it on ultra 1080p with all highest settings and high resolution texture pack on my hd6870.
It never drops under 50 fps, avg=58! I think you could play it easy on ultra!

I have it now. Awesome game! Playing it on high at 1080p and although I haven't bothered to benchmark it yet, it's running nice and smooth. I'll have to see what ultra is like soon and benchmark it. :)

Thanks for all the help guys. :)

Even if that gpu is sometimes behind a 560 ti, it's being assisted by a great cpu. So I would think that even if your card has shortcomings at some part of the game, the cpu will help push it the rest of the way processing-wise and help run smoothly even under the most demanding of settings.

Yeah it all runs fine. The 5870 is still a great card. May get another one for CrossFire one day. :)

A 4870 should be OK for those older games and OK for Skyrim. What resolution do you want to play at?
