Raid 0 Question

Hey guys,

Right im going to setting up Raid 0 hopefully when i get a second 250Gb Seagate.

I also have to buy a Pci raid controller card as my mobo does not support raid itself

But i dont know much about raid,Does it matter what raid card i get?...is there something i should be looking for when it comes to a RAID controller card?

Ive looked on some raid cards, and it says "Supports data transfer rates up to 150Mbps "

So in Raid 0 config,Would it slow anything down?

I just want a cheap performance boost tbh,RAID 0 seems to be the answer as 250Gb drives are dirt cheap now!

any help appreciated.

If you have a spare PCI-E X1 or X4 slot maybe get a RAID card for that, regular PCI can cause some bottlenecks, especially with fast drives and SSD's.

do you really think a pci version will bottleneck his computer, hes got a slow and old cpu.
also hes got a p45 mobo doesnt that have raid?

150mbps is crap

You have a PCIe x1 slot at the bottom, find a raid card for x1

edit, here ya go-

Well i cant use Newegg as im in the UK,But i did find that exact same card for sale in the uk and it was £40 without delivery:cool:

Do you think this one will be okay?

SATA II 2 Port with RAID Controller Card - PCI Express

# Supports 3.0Gb/s & NCQ
# 1-lane (x1) PCI-Express Bus with transfer rate 2.5 Gb/s interfacing
# Compliant with SATA II specification with transfer rate 3.0 Gb/s
# Backward compatible to SATA 1.0a specification
# Support hard disks with Native Command Queue (NCQ) feature

Under £20 :)

Lol my cpu may not be an i7,and a little outdated....BUT its not slow at all and does everything i want it to with ease and still get good performance,The major thing thats slowing my system down is my hard drive....and thats why in going to Raid. ;)

Are you going to run Lucid in RAID? That will create problems because the boot files need to be in a RAID 1 config and your /home files can be in RAID 0.

Nah it would just be windows 7 x64,id wipe the system and do a fresh install :),Only trying out linux for now.....yes i could have installed it on a Virtial machine,But you dont get full system performance andi wanted to experience what it was like with all the pretty gfx settings enabled etc. ;)

Go with Samsung F3, fastest drives available, apart from the 10k ones.

I've got one and it scores 5.9 in Win7 rating.

My Seagate 250Gb 16mb cache scores 5.9 in windows 7 too,I brought a Samsung F1 before,A 1tb drive but it failed

Yes windows scores are basically useless. You could have 4 spinning drives in raid 0 and it will give you a 5.9.

The 640gb caviar black is one of the best spinning drives there is...it's much faster than the 500 because it's dual platter VS single on the 500-

A single 640 will be faster than two of those 250's in raid 0. Just get the 640 and forget the raid controller.

Well someone posted up a HD Tune on that 640 drive...

And heres my 250Gb currently :P

The black is faster as you can see,But do you guys think it will be all that much faster?...worth the £51?

It's not just the speed in MB/S, look at the access time! Thats what you really notice the most. This is why solid state disks are amazing, .1ms access time.

Usually caviar black's pull atleast 100 mb/s average, so maybe that guy's drive was really fragmented or something. You are pulling good numbers for a 250gb drive, very interesting,

Your 250's in raid 0 will probably pull like 120mb/s average, but still have the poor access time. The caviar black is the better upgrade.

Two things to take into account. This drive is a few years old now, so it has degraded some. And second, this is my AMD backup rig with the 750 south bridge. The intel ICH10 is superior to the 750 so you may pull slightly better numbers.

RAID only helps with data throughput, so you probably won't really see a significant boost unless you are constantly pushing your system. May I ask why is it you want to run RAID 0? One crash and your whole array can go bye-bye which is why I don't run RAID 0 anymore on my desktop at home on a windows box. In fact, it is better to run multiple drives for data redundancy in my opinion.
