Ram help! Please

Hi guys,

I recently bought 2 x 1gb new RAM for my PC, Non-ECC unbuffered samsung RAM to run alongside my existing memory, both are supposedly compatible, however when i try to run with all 4 memory slots full, 4gb of memory, the computer does not run. All the fans and lights come on, but the computer does not ouput a signal and start running. I have tried all other RAM combinations, running one new RAM stick with one existing one, running both new sticks, and i have tested all the slots. However when i try and run with anything greater than 2gb (2x1gb) in 2 slots (or even if i run it on slot 1 and 3) it does not properly boot.
Why is this? How can i fix it??

Please Help. Thanks so much!

Louis

What speed of RAM did you purchase, what speed RAM is already in your PC, and what PC do you have, so we can check what speed RAM the system supports?

by speed do you mean the data transfer rate? or the memory clock?

also the machine is an ASUS T3-M2NC51PV

You didn't specify the type (DDR, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4) or the speed (1333mhz, 1600mhz, etc.)

According to the documentation from ASUS, your computer supports DDR2 533, 667, and 800mhz ram.

The RAM that i have bought is DDR2 and 667Mhz clock speed, my existing RAM is DDR2 but im not sure as to the clock speed, however it currently works in my machine, so i assume it's one of those listed above

Try taking out your old ram and just use the new ram and see if it works. If it does, then we can assume that old and new ram aren't playing nice together. Another thing you can do is try resetting cmos before putting the new ram back in. Sometimes it helps.

Okay I've now managed to get the computer to boot, by laying the ram out in a different order in the sockets. However now it is stuck in a boot loop

So by laying the ram out: old new old new, it actually posts but doesn't go to the OS

the new ram is pc-5300 and the old ram is pc2-5300, is that a problem?

They are the same ram. Did you try what I suggested yet? Take out the old ram and just use the new ram and see if it works correctly.

Then they don't play nice together, some ram does that. Try resetting the cmos. To do this. Shut system down, unplug power from power supply, remove cmos battery from motherboard, press and hold the power button on the case for seconds then wait 10 minutes. Insert old and new memory then reinsert battery, reconnect power, try booting up. If it still don't work then its memory incompatibility between the 2 sets.

Okay I'll try that right now, weirdly enough, if I put one old RAM stick in, and one new one in then the computer boots up fine

You most likely need to change the sata controller setting from ide to ahci or from ahci to ide. Were you running a raid configuration?

i have no idea how to change the sata controller (its an ami bios) but im now kinda panicking as i now have extra problems, no i wasnt running a raid config, also it can detect my cd drive and that is sata

If the hard drive is clicking then thats not a good sign, its called the click of death and usually means hard drive is shot. Resetting the cmos did not cause that, just so you know. How old is the hard drive?

not very, coupla years, tops. there is nothing else that would have caused it, it seems highly coincidental that it would have happened right now. it is also making an odd whirring noise

If you can verify its the hard drive clicking and making funny noises(probably spinning up and back down at random rates) Can guarantee the drive is bad. You did shut the system down properly right before attempting to reset cmos?

yup it is clicking and spinning up and down, pretty much, my default boot drive was a different one anyway, so it seems weird that one would have died
