RAM not making computer run much faster

So I finally installed my ram. Thank you guys for the help! But I don't feel as if my computer is running much faster. Especially in regards to video editing. (which is the reason I got more ram in the first place) it still gets sluggish during playback. I always thought the RAM would make it run smoother which it did in the beginning but maybe that was just me thinking it was smoother. Do I need a Solid State Drive instead? My video card is decent. What else is there to do?

SPECS

Sorry I didn't post my specs. The one on my signature are other computers. The one I was referring to was my laptop. It has 2.4GHz Core i7, 16GB of Ram, AMD Radeon HD 6770M, a regular harddrive.

If your pc has the specs shown in your sign, it would be the cpu AND the ram that makes your pc running slow in all cases.

Things such as video editing, video encodings and so on...require strong processor in order to work faster and not just RAM memory.Even if you have 32 GB of RAM it will not make a difference if your processor is not strong enough since the processor chip is the one who is executing all the calculations needed for a specific event such as loading graphics which does many calculations in order to show in the right dimensions and so on...

RAM is just used to store needed program objects and other things which are then used (read from) for the specified purposes according to needs. But it's definetely faster when those objects and other things are read from that RAM memory rather than the PF from the HDD which is a lot slower considering that the HDD plate niddle head IS very fast, but not even close as RAM.Imagine RAM as SSD and HDD as HDD.

Typical usage scenario (example) 1:

GAME CRASHES SO OFTEN AND HDD LED IS LIGHTING SO OFTEN.

---> Usually in this case more RAM memory is required, but other things can be the cause too.

Typical usage scenario (example) 2:

GAME LAGS SO OFTEN.

---> Usually in this case stronger processor chip is required, but other things can be the cause too.

Typical usage scenario (example) 3:

GAME'S MOVEMENTS ARE VERY SLOW.

---> Usually in this case stronger graphic card chip is required, but other things can be the cause too.

Typical usage scenario (example) 4:

GAME DATA IS LOADING VERY SLOW,BUT ALL THE HARDWARE COMPONENTS ARE STRONG MORE THAN IT IS EVEN NECCESSARY.

---> Usually in this case the cause is an old, slow or damaged/defective or even dying hard disk drive and should be replaced with the newer and better one or even solid state drive, but it is not really neccessary.Good HDD will do just fine.

Typical usage scenario (example) 5:

GAME IS NOT WORKING AS IT SHOULD (such as it crashes, lags, runs slow, loading slow and so on...),BUT ALL THE HARDWARE COMPONENTS ARE STRONG MORE THAN IT IS EVEN NECCESSARY AND HDD/SSD IS BRAND NEW AND WORKING PROPERLY.

---> Usually in this case the cause is software related and not hardware related.Such as: corrupted OS data, corrupted other data such as game data, corrupted registry data, viruses, malicious programs, too many running foreground or/and background programs and so on...

You mentioned you have problems with the video playback. In this case SSD might help since jumping from one part of the video to other parts of the video while watching it IS slower on HDD than it is on SSD.

I also agree with SmileMan who said that RAM and processor is the reason.Because they really are weak.256 MB of RAM memory is not enough these days.Bare minimum even for me is 512 MB of RAM.
And 1.01 ghz is also not enough these days especially if it's old solo processor with not so good optimizations.

Cheers!

sorry for the hijack but i installed 8gb from 4gb amd the specs syayed the same rating?
What specs are you talking about? Are you referring to the rating that Windows gives your PC? I wouldn't expect to see that rating increase going from 4GB to 8GB.

If you Video Editting on AMD Anthlon Processor 1.01 GHz, 256 MB RAM then you need a new Computer to see any difference.

To OP, do you want to test my bench?(look sign)
You'd probably make a chance to get last place award.
Download the 32bit, let it run and go watch television, it can take a while on your athlon :D. Then look back on your pc and do same with other 2 parts of the bench. Plz post your results in an image :D.

On topic: agreed, time to buy a new pc. We can help you out building a pretty nice pc for a low price.

didnt read you had an acient computer maybe a new oneon the saving list i got a quad core 2.66 8gb ram 500gb hdd etc and 8800gtx 512 for around 300 card was 20 quid as on board isnt the best

What are the specs of your PC?

If you answer the above we could help you more.

I don't mind getting tips on building my own system(though I hear the processors and motherboards will soon be soldered together?) but right now I use this system for most of my media work. Thank you guys

There is a point of Diminishing Returns on performance by adding more Ram. Basically you reached that.

Did you go from using 8gb. to 16gb. If so unless your system was using all of the 8 and hitting virtual alot. Upgrading to 16 will hardly make any difference.

I was using 4gb before. I assumed the video was running slow since I was low on ram because I heard you need 2 gb per core. It was also on discount so I got the highest amount the computer would accept. I saw it on a video that more ram is good for video work so I decided to buy it. I'm guessing it probably wasn't a good idea?

16 was alittle overkill. Going from 4 to 8 would have probably done fine. But if you got a good deal on it, no biggie.

I doubt you'd really see a difference between 4GB and 8GB anyway unless you're using all 8GB. I went from 8GB to 16GB and I haven't noticed a difference.

What do you mean by video editing? What program are you using. 8GB is certainly not enough for video editing at HD (mine maxes out 16GB often).

Video editing uses the CPU primarily, but CS6 will use the GPU too. But, honestly you will see a vast improvement in perfromance with an ssd (in all aspects), but overall a laptop is really not designed for video editing.

Adding ram wont make it faster because the system working on the lower clock speed. I recommend you replace the RAM instead, to see a significant difference.

Nonsense.

DDR3 frequencies make little difference in real world performance. However maxing out 16GB RAM using premiere pro is very easy, especially when working with HD files.

When that happens, the computer must store information on hdd, which will bottleneck DDR and CPU due to the bandwidth.

RAM is king in video machines.
