Random crashing, sometimes bsod, sometimes just black screen lock up

I don't know why but my desktop has started crashing, usually under load but not always. The ram, HDD, graphics card and power supply are all less than a year old. I rebuilt an old acer AMD phenom quad core and just used the motherboard and chip as a base point, (being the most expensive part)

For the last few days its been crashing out a lot, usually when I try to play rift, but not always. sometimes it just locks up, gives me a black screen and then does nothing, I have to force it off for a restart. It has given me bsod a few times but booted normally after.

Ive done all the checks i can think of, and its all telling me everything is working as it should be. Ive updated drivers that can be updated and ive even had the card out and had a look. Ive just done a ram check and it came up no problems detected too.

I just cant work out whats causing it to crash. While playing rift, it will either crash out on first loading, or crash at some random point after that, usually during a loading screen.

Ive got a dxdiag but dont know how to post it.

4gb ram
radion hd 7700 graphics card
AMD phenom 6950 quad core 2.3gH
Windows 7 x64 legit.
3TB HDD
4 fans, 2 case, 1 on the cpu, 1 on the gpu

for the last few months, since finishing the rebuild, its been just fine. can run AC revelations smoothly with good graphics, runs a 125x minecraft resource pack no trouble, will run just about anything ive thrown at it easily with mostly high graphics.

does anyone know what could be causing this? ive only tried minecraft since the problem started so will give something else a go at some point, but it was fine for the time i used it.

sorry no, its to fast to note anything down. just says your computer is shutting down to protect it and it does a crash dump. its doesn't do it very often, it mostly just goes to a black screen and sticks there.

ive just played hexxit for an hour and a half and its been fine. seams to be something about rift.

Right click "my computer">properties>advanced system settings
click "settings" in startup and recovery and uncheck "automatically restart" in the system failure box. At least this is how it's done on my Vista system, this will keep your pc from automatically restarting when the BSOD comes up (you will need to turn off the PC manually when the BSOD comes up) giving you time to write an error code when it happens again.

Will any other games work?
I hate to speculate but I had this issue once and it turned out my GPU had died during a power outage.

No such thing as a Phenom 6950, sure its not a 9650, think it ran at 2.3ghz.? What brand and model power supply are you running? Whats your GPU and CPU temps under load?

I thought that too but it has done it once while watching BBC iPlayer which made me think otherwise. power supply is a 500w brick, can't remember the brand as it was donated to me but is supposed to be a good one.

could be 9650, probably miss typed it, dislexic so nothing unusual there. it was an Acer x1300 up until last year when it got a case and everything else.

I will see if it bsods again and get a code, but like I said, doesnt do that often.

minecraft hexxit worked for an hour and a half yesterday no issues, will try sims 3 or something today.

don't know what the temps are, but even the power supply feels cool. (it has its own fan too)

well after a couple of solid good hours of rift, it finally did it, which is the longest ive been able to play it for all week. it gave me the message:

attempt to reset the display driver and recover from time out failed.

when i rebooted it gave me all these numbers:

Additional information about the problem:
BCCode: 116
BCP1: FFFFFA8003BAA4E0
BCP2: FFFFF880048E0D88
BCP3: 0000000000000000
BCP4: 0000000000000002
OS Version: 6_1_7601
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 256_1

anyone know what this is about?

Thanks, ive already got the latest drivers for everything i can. temps all look good. i have got 2 case fans running on max 100% of the time as they are plugged straight into the power supply and have no regulator on them. It seams that noone really knows what causes this problem, other than it could be drivers, could be a bad card, could be motherboard (which i cant afford to replace) or could be a conflict somewhere. you would think there was something that could pick up exactly what the issues is wouldnt you.

Do this.

Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

thanks. I realised just now that the updates I told it to download yesterday didn't download, so I'm just waiting for it to sort itself out. once its back I will give that a try and let you know.

its a casecom atx 500w.

just says 7700 on the diag, can't remember exactly. its been ok up till now, and the PSU has been one of the things in there the longest. I guess I just ruled out drivers as it's just done it in safe mode.

I was about to do a fresh install of my graphics drivers but its crashing more and more now. I did update them from the site a couple of days ago though.

how do I test the power supply? I can't afford to buy one, which is y someone gave it to me.

Go into device manager, right click on the video card entry and click on properties, then click on the details tab and give me the 4 digit device id number. It will look like this.

ven_xxxx and dev_yyyy You may have the change the property box to hardware id. I just need the 4 digits after the dev_

The problem you have is trying to run a video off of a crappy power supply and it can't push the card to to where it will work correctly. Once we know what exact card you have, you will need to purchase a better power supply.

ive got 4 lines come up. they are all dev_683D& then after that they are different.

I can't buy a new power supply, I've got no money to buy it with, esspesialy if I'm going to need to buy an expensive one. all of my income was stopped 2 weeks ago and I don't know when it will start again.

Looks like you got the 7770. Unfortunately you will need a new power supply. The 7770 requires a 500 watt power supply with 19 amps on the 12 volt rail. Yours only has 17 amps and really isn't a 500 watt unit, more like closer to only 400 watts. Save up your money for a corsair cx500 unit, cheapest decent unit you will need.

trouble is I've got no money coming in to save. the machine is now to crashy to use at all. why has it been working fine for so many months and only now being an issue?

what's the main watage I need then, going on that it has to be uber cheap?
