Random crashing, sometimes bsod, sometimes just black screen lock up

This is what you don't understand. You don't want to skimp on the power supply, its the backbone of your system. I wouldn't get anything less than what I suggested.

I understand I can't skimp, I also understand I've got £400 to live on for an unditerminate amount of time, and I can't take £50 out of that for a PSU. normally I've only got £70 a week to live on as it is. im seeing if I can get my parents to buy it for me for my birthday but that's not until June.

I don't get how its been ok this long, and now it can't even idle on the desktop without crashing.

are the CX range all the same just different watt? so cx600 is the same but 600w?

Lower end PSU's tend to suddenly die quicker than higher quality ones; the PSU is what supplies/directs power to the PC, when it dies the whole system pretty much goes.

Sorry I had to leave for work or would have replied back. You most likely have pushed the bad psu too far trying to run your video card and now its probably not putting out the original volts/watts so your machine runs like crap now.

i probably will in a few years. I intend to just upgrade bits from now on as things move on. I've only had this one a few months so won't be anytime soon. at about £3 more than the 500 I might as well.

The problem you are having appears to be either damaged, or failing VRAM on your GPU. This may not be permanent, and is very much likely to be caused by ongoing or acute underpowered states.

The PSU you currently have is garbage, and will struggle to provide even half the 12V rail it claims.

Don't buy something for a use-case that is years away.

For your machine a CX430W with 32A on the 12V rail is sufficient by far and will provide you with double the power you're getting now. You can pick that up new for $20. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026

If I were you, I wouldn't use that computer until you replace the PSU.

wasn't going to use it till the PSU is replaced, I can't as it just crashes out all the time now.

its not so cheap over here to buy stuff like that, the cx500 is about £45, which is about $75. I wish I could buy a decent PSU for £12!

I won't be able to afford to buy another one in a few years after buying one now. I'm never going to have much money to spend, I'm stuck living on disability. I will just upgrade the graphics when this one can't handle it anymore, and I don't know when that will be.

well the new PSU arrived today, got it fitted and after a few mins in rift it bsod 116 again. I'm currently doing a clean install for graphics drivers so will see where that gets me. if its still doing it then I really don't know what else it could be!

Download HWMonitor and check your temps often. Even if your fans are running nice and fast, something can go wrong (too much thermal paste, for example). Also, I am not quite sure what the Rift is, but try upgrading your java to x64 (or update it). I know I was having problems for the longest time getting minecraft to be stable on my PC and fixing my java was the only help I got. If all else fails, try reinstalling windows. cant hurt you much, can it: :)

lol its just rift, its an mmo, like world of Warcraft, but free. I've got Java x64 and that's been fine. I've got speed can for the temps and all readings are good, I've got 2 case fans running on full all the time as they are plunged straight into the power supply without a controller.

it does appear that I had a corrupt driver, the complete clean out and reinstall seams to have sorted it. further testing today will give me more of an idea but i had it on for a good 3 hours last night, running fast with bannised without an issue.

im still getting an occasional stop 116 bsod error, mostly while trying to play mighty quest, but has done it during rift a few times.
ive got a fresh instal of drivers for everything, the only original thing left in the computer is the mobo and cpu. trouble is 116 seams to cover just about anything and its very hard to diagnose what it is. its stopped doing the total blackout thing it was doing before i put the new psu in at least. but this 116 just wont let me play mighty quest for more than a few mins. i really dont get it now. does anyone else have any ideas?

Ok, download PC Wizard from my sig, install it and run it. Go to FILE, SAVE AS and click OK, copy the text out of that file into this thread.
