Reasonable OC a64 3000 Venice without aftermarket cooling

well I had no luck overclocking it on the weekend, the highest I could get it to run was 1.9ghz.. the gigabyte k8nf 9 just doesn't seem to have all the options I'd expected in the bios, is there some way to access ram timings options etc through some advanced function? the MB intelligent tweaker aint got squat..

This is the bios for my mobo, though the clock ratio only goes to 9x, not 11..

i also have the 3000 venice chip. mine becomes unstable before i get it to even 2.0ghz. where do i put the voltage at. is there anything else i should be changing too?

You've got a very similar mobo to mine, go into the bios and hit CTRL-F1, that will take you into the advanced user setup, from there you should be able to adjust the settings slightly.

I've been told that the ram timings may be set incorrectly on default in the bios too, you may want to check that as well.

Did you get that program with the mobo, I think it's called easy tune or something, it allows you to OC the machine in windows, I can get up to around 1.9-2 before I get problems, the standard MIB intelligent tweaker part of the bios is pretty limiting..

Oh, and make sure you have cool and quite off.

Other than that I'm still trying to figure it out myself, what I've said above has simply been regurgitated from other info I've read..

Ok, I've had no luck with overclocking, the most I could get out of the computer was 2ghz, and it was extremely unstable.

Here's the options in the bios, I'm a bit confused about what I'm doing wrong, i've followed the instructions from 101 and another OC'ing advice I got from madshrimps, but NO DICE....bugger!

HT FREQUENCY: x1 - x5 (by .5 increments)
HT Width: 8up 8down -16up 16down (16's standard)
DRam memclock: 100-250mhz (200 standard)
CPU frequency: 200 - 400mhz
K8 CPU Clock ration: x5 - x9 (by .5 increments)
Linear RGB clock: core clock & memory clock
Robust graphics booster.

Any advice where I might be going wrong? I've tried lowering the cpu clock to x7, then upping the cpu frequency, but it gets unstable any higher than 210mhz.. Oh, and I lowered the HT frequency to x3.

Oh, and all my ram timings seem to be correct 2.5-3-3-7.

think about it guys, the FX-57 is at 2.8Ghz with the same 90nm and same instruction set, and the same core, so i should be able to get it up to atleast 2.8 with DDR500/PC4000 RAM :P

essentialy the 4000+ is an FX-53 processor which is clocked at 2.4GHz, with the same exact everything on it, only renamed....
FX-53 2.4GHz 1MB L2 with a 2000 bus San Deigo core/Athlon 4000+ same exact specs
FX-55 2.6GHz 1MB L2 with a 2000 bus San Deigo core
FX-57 2.8GHz 1MB L2 With a 2000 bus San Deigo core
all have these:
L1 Cache: 64KB+64KB
L2 Cache: 1MB
Multimedia Instruction: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, 3DNOW! Professional
Process Type: 90 nm
Processor Core: San Deigo

very wierd. Cause my computer oced to 2.08ghz even without the pci locks (which eventually put a end to the oc). Maybe you should get a better heatsink and put some arctic silver onto it. Always did you remember to up the vcore?

Hey sorry janus i have not been on for a couple of days.Anyway, when you overclock your cpu,the ram speed seems to increase,im not sure why,can somebody explain? Anyway, what you need to do is underclock your ram.Underclock my ram! I bet your asking :) Yeah, you should have an option for the RAM settings in the advanced chipset features section.I cant be 100% sure of what im typing here as im not at home with my computer,so what you need to do is when you overclock your cpu, that the speed of your ram does not exceed 210mhz,as this will make your computer unstable.Change the speed of the ram in the bios. You shold have a selection between something like200,166,133mhz,and as i said im not to sure as im not home :) Change the speed of the ram to 166mhz and whenever you increase your cpu clock, the speed of the ram will increase to,and repeat this step until you get a reasonable oc.Just remember, the ram should not run faster than 210mhz.Oh and make sure that the HT multiplier x the fsb does not exceed 1000,otherwise the computer will become unstable as well.Use cpu-z to check the speed of the ram.Its under the spd tab.I hope all this helps. Now i have a headache :(

This is pissing me off now. Maybe I should change my ram timings from 2.5-3-3-7 to 3-3-3-8? Would that help?

I can't understand why I'm not able to get any more than 210mh cpu frequency from 200 standard!

well, i got the same problem as janus. i upped the voltage too. nothing.... i have corsair value ram. i thought turning ram frequency down wouldn't matter with any ram.

Could be I guess, it's pc3200, it can't be that bad that it's stopping me overclocking altogether though, can it?!

Maybe giga-byte mobos are just pieces of shyte? Surely the DFI's are easier than this, I've done alot of research on the net, and heaps of people seem to have problems with overclocking when using a gigabyte mobo.
