Resurrection of a Harddrive?

Hi guys,

I'm a bit of a newbie here so hope its ok to post this here.

I know the web is bursting with answers similar to my question, but I want to see what you guys think of my situation.

A few years ago, when i was very young, and innocent to backing things up, I was unfortunate enough to get a virus. A friend of mine told me to reformat the laptop, so I did. Not realising the effect it would have. I lost everything, rare music and special photos. Although I have since gotten over the loss of most of the stuff,
there is a few things I would love to retrieve. (Mainly just a few photographs of a concert I was at, and loved ones that have since passed :( ). I continued to use the laptop not realising that there might have been a hope for me to get these things back. I put all the programs back
in and used up alot of the harddrive space. Then the computer died. Because of its age, i didn't
feel it was worth the money to get it fixed, and i hadn't time to fix it due to heavy school workload,
which I needed a computer for.

Then yesterday for some reason, I decided to research about it a bit more. I don't know why, but I'm hopeful that maybe I can get some of my things back.

I was wondering if it would be worth my while getting the laptop repaired to try and get some files back?
Am I clutching at straws, or is there any chance?

Thank you in advance.

If the space where the old files were stored at got over written then most likely everything is gone. You could try downloading and installing recuva to see if it can recover any files.

http://www.piriform.com/recuva

install the software and run a deep scan. if the laptop won't boot up then you will need to remove the hard drive and attach it to a different system using an adapter.
