ok, now I am just getting mad, as every time I go to newegg to look I make a slightly different list and they all look good. So how about this one?

Or If I get http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227725 I can use the HDD's from my D630 and HP laptops (the 7200RPM is in the HP, so it gone either way) in the desktop and the SSD in the lappy, hopefully it will be have as good as the SATA 2 one that is in sisters lappy currently. The main reason for this is to extend the battery life of the D630 a little bit and have more room in the desktop. So it would be 80GB on 7200 RPM boot drive and 640 GB on 5400 RPM data drive. Then when I upgrade the desktop, I can take the 80 GB back and install the SSD in the dektop.
This is all assuming that I do not get a video card. If I talk to grandad next week, I may be able to salvage 100 or more and get both a SSD and the GPU. idk yet.
 
id take the 500 watt. The antec is going to be the same price as the silverstone anyway. Since I budgeted fir the 59.99 then Ill take it.

So jonny, for the last thing I was talking about there, GPU or SSD, what would you say jonny?
 
is that a passively cooled 6770? that cooler is monstrous, didn't know they existed.

But do you plan to game on this at all? if not then there is no need, if you're only planning to play really low quality games then a HD should be fine, i know my friend plays a lot of games with good settings at 1080p on his lappy with a pentium with HD, so they're plenty capable. And an ssd would be really nice, or were you wanting it for the lappy do you could take its larger hdd?
 
I will game on it some. I tried Airborne on my HP here with a HD4200 GPU and it gets a grand total of 3 FPS at 136*768 on max. I don't know for sure how much better the HD is, but I was hoping that I could play it at max with at least 30FPS.

Yes, that does seem to be a passively cooled 6770. I could probably find one just outside the budget that is actively cooled. I was looking at one to start with.

I think it's your call, but i'm leaning towards the gpu, a few exra seconds loading isn't too bad compared to either no gaming or hideous looking gaming.

Take a look at the edit with the options and let me know what you think there. I think th GPU is the call though. As i can always fold with the GPU when I get the 580 (possibly hold out to the 770/780).
 
I'd go for the 6790 for performance, if linux really matters, the 550ti isn't far behind in performance, and cuda i think folds better. but for the 6770, wasn't saying passive is bad, just never seen one before and was like wtf for a sec there.
 
Passive is bad for OC. Plus I don't really want a massive cooler sitting there.

How far behind in performance is teh 550? I would like to have Nvidia, but if it is more than a 100 r so MHz OC could settle, then I will go AMD and just unplug the card when I want to run Linux. I may be able to run Linux off of teh standard drivers anyway since I don't do any graphics intense stuff with it.
 
I am not seeing that. It only gets about 4 FPS better. I will be gaming at 1366*768 for now (cause that is teh resolution of my monitor.)

I think that it would be a fairly good with the GTX, but I do not really know.

Do you know how well the 6790 OCs verses a GTX550ti?
 
for the 7 games it averages 6.7 fps higher, and that 4fps difference in that one bench is still over 8% faster.
 
ok, 6 FPS. I do not see a big deal breaker here. It still averaged high enough on the 1280 resolution, which is as close as I can fine to the 1366 i am using.

I am still over budget by $28 not including shipping. I can probably get 200 from grandad, I am talking to him thursday eve about it. If I can, it is heading back up to a HAf 912 and a P67 motherboard. Probably a pentium G620 or 2100 too.
 
That'll be cutting it close, the 480 system on anandtech uses 480 under furmark load. that OCZ has 2 25w's which would prob sum up closer to 45w, which is 540, not too much headroom. Although it is slightly more powerful than the 6950, but the 6950 system only used like 320w, but that also has linux support, so that's up to you,slightly higher fps and linux support, or slightly lower fps and way lower power usage.

I guess what I am saying is that with the 480, I will be able to do everything I want to. All the MOH games (especially Airborne), and BFB@c will run pretty well on it, right? The 480 is like a 570 isn't it, but cheaper? May be able to do physics on it with a 580/770/780 right?
 
the 480, according to the anandtech benches, is just barely ahead of the 6950, so it's not a 570, so like i said before, you get a few extra fps, about the same or less than the 6790 v 550ti, and linux support, but you're using way more power, 480w vs 320w, 480 v 6950
