Running 4:3 apps centered instead of stretched?

I just put my old computer on a new monitor so I could use my new computer with my old setup (the new monitor is a bit cheaper than the old, as this is just my backup/guest computer now). But, where I had a 4:3 monitor to game on, now I'm limitted to a 16:9, and it makes games look really wierd since most dont apt for widescreen support.

What I'm wondering is (using the Radeon x1950 Pro), is it possible to have my screen shrink down to a 4:3 aspect ratio (in other words, have black bars on the sides of the screen, much like when watching a widescreen movie on a 4:3 TV) during events which call for a 4:3, and use the wide screen during the rest of the time I use the computer?

Or am I going to have to choose between manually swapping down to 4:3 for games or keeping the widescreen for other functions?

16:9 is the right aspect for widescreens, it should not look weird, unless you are just not used to it. I personally think gaming with a widescreen is so much better, to me it feels more natural. I know with nvidia theres a tool to resize, so probably one for ati too, but it would a lot of work changing the size every time you wanted to play a game.

I know 16:9 is the standard for widescreen. The problem is that most games I play try to force me into 4:3 aspect ratio, which results in very wide textures. In HL2, for example, the tops of the barrels are oval.

o ok, ive had a LCD tv do that but never a monitor, i just forced it to the aspect i want on the tv in its menu.

You need a DVI cable, then it's in Catalyst Control Centre, I forget where since it's been months since I used an ATi card, but it should be fairly noticeable
