SATA DVD drive not being recognized

I bought a PC from a friend that didn't include an optical drive (he took his out to put in another PC of his). I figured I'd just easily put one of mine in, but for some reason, PC isn't recognizing it at all. I even tried using a different SATA port, but no luck. Is there something I'm missing here?

It's a Dell PC with the stock Dell motherboard, btw.

Well, I uninstalled drivers from the last DVD drive that was in it, but that didn't really seem to help.

I've never had to install drivers for a DVD drive. I would simply just plug it in and it would work.

Check the bios. Usually you have to enable the sata ports on dell boards.

You did plug in the power connector?. Is your harddrive a IDE, if so you probably never had sata drivers installed.Does the drive show up in the bios? Either get the Sata drivers or see if there is a setting in the bios to set the sata ports to Native mode. Or like johnb35 said, they might not be enabled.

I will look in the BIOS to see if it's enabled, but I'm 99% sure it is. The guy before me used a SATA DVD drive, so unless he disabled it himself, everything should be fine.
