Server Setup?

Okay I just got a free computer. Its not great, but i want to abuse it since i cant think of much to do with it, other than make it a Torrent server...or something like that. ANYWAYS heres what it is (I think.)

A dual proc Pentium III (I believe 1.8Ghz total, Im really not all that sure yet.)
ASUS CUV4X-DLS
2 gigs of cheap generic SDRAM
82 gig harddrive

Manufacturer's product description
The ASUS CUV4X-DLS Dual Processor Mainboard is based on VIA 694XDP AGPset with ATX form factor for the latest support in Intel Pentium III 500MHz,1130MHz+ Coppermine processors. This fascinating chipset is equipped with onboard Intel 82559 LAN, LSI Ultra160 SCSI, 133MHz Front Side Bus (FSB), 4GB PC133/PC100 SDRAM support, AGP PRO/4X, Ultra DMA/100 and 66 IDE plus Wake-On LAN & Ring. It is also bundled with ASUS PC Health Monitoring to monitor and ensure maximum safety for your PC. VIA 694XDP is a high performance chipset, which provides 133MHz memory bandwidth to supports a wide range of PC133 memory devices.

Its nothing special, I'm just not quite sure what to do with it. I don't really want to spend any money on it, so buying shit is really out of the question...though not completely. If you have any interesting ideas, feel free to suggest them. If you feel this thing is overclockable tell me! I will give more info when i get home and get it stripped.

My 1/2 assed ideas:

- I would like a machine thats sole purpose in life is to download/upload torrents from people. I can then in turn take them off of that machine and use them on my gaming rig, or whatever.

- CS:S or HLDM dedicated server? Is this thing powerful enough to do this? remotely effectively?

When your Running a Dedicated Server, you dont need ANY GPU power at all.

Dedicated server, in simple terms, does not process all the Graphic Processing, The Clients computers do that.

The Dedicated Server's can be downloaded Here at Steam

I HIGHLY Suggest running Windows Server 2003.

Then you can set the server up for DHCP, Which basically means When a computer connects too the Router/switch the server will automatically give the Client computer a IP from a pre-defined Range.

That computer will be PERFECT for a simple home Lan.

I have a Intel 1.4Ghz Processor, 1 gig of ram, 128 Meg GPU with a 24 Port switch that i picked up on Ebay for $11.50

I would recommend you do something the same.

As for your torrents, When you share your Servers hard drive, on the Clients computers, you can do whats called "Map Network Drive"

When you do This, The folder/hard drive you have selected too map will show up in My Computer as basically a normal hard drive you can access, copy files, replace and do everything you can do on your Local Computers Hard drive.

As for the Remoteing in, Windows Server 2003 Supports Multiple people logged on to it at the same time, so you could have:

eg. 9 people logged on too the computer setting up Game Servers, Doing File work, Anything.

This is what ive got going atm.

Just a Simple Computer, With the 24 Port switch on top.

Easy As.

When you get it all up and Running, Either Repost or PM me.

Good Luck.

Well I decided to go the Linux route (decided before your post.) I might switch over because linux is bugging me. Would it work for internet or just LAN?

:O dont insult linux! jk :D. have you ever run linux. if not ya it is hard. but if you want more then one server. you could have a vm (virtual machine) on a computer with like 3 computers on it. also wow. got enough wires there k3rupt? :P
