Should I upgrade?

Hi guys, I'm at a bit of a dilemma. My current specs are:

Packard Bell Rio motherboard (LGA 775 socket)
Intel Pentium D 3.40Ghz
2 Gb RAM
GeForce 7500LE graphics card

I understand that this is an extremely outdated system but I really can't afford to spend much if any as I'm saving for a car. I plan to buy a laptop before I go to university but this will either be for next September or the September after. Lately my computer has been running really slowly so I will be formatting while upgrading to Windows 7. Will a format be enough to play games like Battlefield 3? Obviously I won't be able to use high settings but I can just about play Crysis now. I honestly can't decide between doing nothing, upgrading or buying a laptop now. What do you think? Also if I should upgrade do you have an reccomendations for parts?

Thanks a lot, Jim

You could maybe play it on the lowest possible settings, but I would say no. Have you tried the Beta for it? Do you have a link to your exact motherboard? And I would hang off going to 7 with this machine. It really wouldn't be worth it since XP is a lot easier to run than 7 so it might go even slower. Could be wrong about that, though.

I think those specs are a bit low to play BF3 but you might get away with it. He would also need to upgrade to Vista or 7 to play since BF3 has no support for XP and DX9 if I am not mistaken.

I already have Vista and I believe the motherboard is GA-8TRC410NMF-RH. Fooozball do you think just a new graphics would be needed?

Lol no you will need to build a new machine the comp I had was way better then yours and I would be lucky to get like 1 or 2 fps on a total war game ad bf3 will need more power then one of them games and if you wanna play it on max settings you will need to spend well over 1000 on a new comp but if you even wanna palt it decently maybe like 700 on the low end you will need to spend

A new graphics card would let you play it. Pentium D, while being an older tech is still an alright dual core. With a better GPU he will be able to play it. Not at the best settings. But the game will be playable.

Yeah maybe run the game but IMO it would not e enjoyable it would be too laggy and look like crap lol my iPod has a better chance of running it then m old comp

I have serious disagreements with this statement... You have kind of ruined your credibility.

CPU will be the limiting factor for sure but I bet that mid range GPU would be able to take this game into a playable range. The only time that I see huge problems is when there are a lot of physics calculations that are done on the CPU. I know this is not a strait comparison but I played BFBC2 on a athalon II x2 at 2.8. I was playing it on high and it was not showing signs of bottlenecking.

It was a joke

My point is he should build a new comp cause even if he upgrades ad gets it to play bf3 it won't last much longer anyway

Wow after all these years I never knew the Pentium D was dual-core  I feel stupid now...
