Should I wait for the nehalem?

I am putting together a new rig and was wondering if it was worth waiting for the nehalem? If so when is its release date?

rumor has it Q4 this year.. but it could be later. in fact its likely going to be later. not only that but it will be expensive... VERY expensive at first.

rumered around 300 for a 2.6ghz quad, but its also ddr3 only, so the setup will probably cost around $1000, but, there will still be price gouging, if you don't need a new pc now, you might as well wait it out

what are your specs and what do you use your computer for? we'll let you know if its worth it to upgrade then.

werd. let us know what you have right now and what you need it to do. maybe you have something nice enough to make the wait worth it. if you don't, then we can figure out what is worth building at the moment to meet your requirements.

Well thanks for your interest. Im recently new to pc gaming but love it to death. Got bioshock crysis and couple other games. I love playing on max settings. I have a ton of music and videos I do a lot of converting and edditing. I used to have an dell xps 630i. It has a q6660 which i ocd to 3.2ghz 4 gigs of corssair mem and an 8800gt. I had multiple issues with at which point i told dell i was tired of it and they offered a full refund. I am stuck with no computer currently. Right now I am using the familys computer. I am new into building but that is what I want to do. I have a bout $1300. I can go even higher if necessary. I was thinking now is the time to build though with all these amazing back to school sales on newegg. Thanks again for your time and interest.

well, if you do a lot of video editing and converting i suggest quad core. Q9550 would be good. since you like gaming i suggest a high-end video card like the HD 4870, and windows vista since it supports direct X 10.

if you plan on overclocking the cpu, i highly suggest aftermarket cooling, like the thermaltake big typhoon (thats what i use). more clockspeed = more heat.

Hey thanks for the suggestions much appreciated. Im sure you do this a lot for other people but it would mean a lot if you could help me piece together a rig. I would really like the input of someone who is more expierenced than I am when Im building my first rig.

a lot of the parts are personal preference. i mean if you like to do a lot of file conversion and video storage then you'd want a quad core with an enourmous hard drive. if you like to game but dont do a whole lot else, then you'd want a ridiculous video card and a dual core processor at a higher frequency. someone else might just like to do internet and like to listen to music, in which case they don't really need any expensive parts at all. then, you've got your enthusiasts who like to spend more time inside their computer than they do in front of it. water cooling and an extremely good motherboard is for that guy.

why dont you show us the parts you plan on buying and then we'll tell you if it'll all work together. we may also be able to help you balance it out with parts that will perform well together. a celeron is NOT meant to be paired with two HD 4870x2's

sounds like a pretty nice setup, very similar to what I would suggest (I would have suggested a Gigabyte EP45-DS3R mobo, an Nvidia GTX280 vid card, and some GSkill RAM that uses the D9GMH chips such as some of the Gigabyte or TeamGroup RAM)

let us know how it goes. sounds like an awesome setup.

Those are pretty nice specs, if you upgrade your videocard to something like the Radeon 4870 the computer will last until the price of Nehalem setups coms down enough so you can get yourself a new build.

Nehalem won't be a lot faster than Yorkfield in single-threaded applications such as most games.

However, Nehalem will destroy Yorkfield in multi-threaded applications.

Most even remotely demanding games utilize at least 2 cores now. If they only run a single thread, chances are the thread won't need all available processing power of even one core of a yorkfield.

I dont know if you saw or not but I had to return that computer so Im stuck with none now.
