Show off your speed

Alright, well turns out we are paying $15/month for something called ELP Internet. Everyday-low-price. And that is supposed to be 2mbps down 1 up. Which is almost impossible to use. Impossible for 2 people anyway. If one person is using it, no other device can do anything with it. But it does stream netflix and hulu perfectly fine, provided only one machine is using it.

That isn't enough for HD, you'll get a nice quality upgrade when improving your package too.

Ouch..

While I was visiting my aunts house, she has .25 up and down, as well as only a 10GB plan

All was gone within two days

Its enough for HD suprisingly. I used to have a 35mbps connection through TWC that i paid $40/month for. Then they decided that it was worth $300/month instead so i had to tell them to shove it and i offered to pay them what our deal was and they said they needed the full price so i didnt pay them a dime.

It's not enough for the best quality though, Netflix streams 1080p @ 3.8Mbps, with SuperHD up to 6Mbps.

No way would a 35Mbps connection cost $300 with TWC.

Well i couldnt imagine my picture looking any better than it does...

And no, i did have other services. When i first signed up, i told them i didnt want any contract or special deals because thats how they robbed my mom. So i was paying $180 for internet and TV. After a year, without even telling me, they bundled all my stuff into something else and my bill went to $300. It was a few years ago i dont remember any specifics, but i do remember not long after they knew i wasnt paying them they sent me another bill where they lowered it to $196 and i still didnt pay them. I told them i would pay what we agreed upon and nothing more. They didnt go for that so they didnt get any money from me.

Also, most the crap on Netflix isnt really HD....Hulu looks miles better and i dont have a problem with either. But like i said, as long as its the only device using the internet.

That's because you only have a 2Mbps connection. I believe Netflix can stream 4K now, and it requires 25Mbps (the article I found was from last year witht he 6Mbps).

I still don't understand what you're talking about with the payments. The price is right on their website, if you only want internet just get the internet only package.

The bitrate lowers to compensate for your connection. If you had more bandwidth you would see the image clear up within a few seconds into a more detailed, higher bitrate stream.

My TWC shat itself at midnight, I had to switch to a Freedompop Wimax unit to flesh out the rest of my counter-striking. It stayed pretty solid at ~90ms. Not too bad for a free plan (500 MB).

I did some reading about this and am confused by it. What's the catch?

There is no catch. It's pretty cool. But you need to be in a Wimax area, and then when that shuts down or if you don't live in a Wimax area, you'll need to pay $5 a month for 500 MB 3G. They also offer free phone service with some phones.

Crappy satellite internet?

Still not sure how freedompop works

My aunt lives in India. She pays the equivalent of 7 dollars a month for internet, TV, and phone

I know this...what im saying is, i can stream HD. But like i said, when i do the internet cant be used for anything else. There might be some 1080p or even 4k content on netflix, but the majority of the older shows i watch are 720p. Hulu shows however are 1080p and i notice a huge difference in quality when watching the latest shows on Hulu. Im not sure my picture quality could be any better on Hulu. Everything looks just as good as it did when i had a 35mbps connection.

There are times when i notice the quality lower but it clears up and it usually only happens once per show.

If there was a way i could prove this i would. But i am just as surprised as anyone that i can watch hulu netflix fine on 2mbps. Hell, just tested it and im runnin 1.6mbps right now and watching netflix fine and its 720p. The only thing i can think of is that since its cable the connection is much more consistant and stable.

You can watch Netflix on a 1Mbps or 500Kbps connection, it just scales the resolution and bitrate to match your connection to an extent. The faster speeds you have, the higher the bitrate, again to an extent. You may be streaming at 720p, but the bitrate is likely lower due to your slow connection.

Netflix seems to have a higher tolerance for low bandwidth compared to other video providers like Youtube.

Thats probably because, like i said, alot of their content isnt really "HD". They consider 720p to be HD. When i had my old connection about 2 years ago, i dont recall anything being more than 720p. They might have 1080p/4k content now, but i can bet its scarce.

Im actually not even sure they have 1080p content. Because i can watch Hulu in 1080p, but i havent seen anything on Netflix match Hulus quality.

As stated before, not really any. Sprint is deactivating Wimax in 2015 though.

They have 4G and LTE plans with a small monthly fee (also you usually have to buy the device). Some devices they give you a dual 3G/LTE allocation. Additional data is pretty cheap, you can usually get a 2 or 4 GB allotment for 15 or 20 a month.

They also have a free cell service and sell phones occasionally for ~$25 (like the HTC 4G EVO). You get a number and have a free 200 minute, 500 text and 500 MB of data plan every month. The voice service is pretty flaky though, I tried to use them for a month or so but ended up going back to Republic with a new Moto X..

Does Comcrap still do that 'Powerboost' thing that doubles your transfer rate for the first 20 MB or so? :p

Probably... This was the first thing I did before installing programs so bc I'm on a new device it might be unthrottled for a bit.. About to test again after installing 10GB of Steam games..
