Slow wireless internet

Lately the wireless internet has been extremely slow. :( It started a short time after I forwarded ports 6881-6889 to uTorrent (I don't think that's what did it though). Anyway, I then reset the Linksys router back to factory defaults and the speed is slow. Any ideas on how to speed it up? Thanks for you help.

have you just got a wireless phone or something that uses a 2.4Ghz frequency?

whats your signal strength? the wireless speed? the speed youre recieving?

We are using channel 4 on the router so it can't be the phone. The signal strength is full. 55MBps. Today it is a bit faster so I would say that the internet browsing speed is 600Kbps. Thanks!

hmm, there could be some packet loss somewhere though, do you have many walls/doors between you and your router and do people walk through there much?

wireless is not always the best option to take, atm im on wirless on my laptop, but thats only because not all of the phone points work in the house atm (new house).
my advise to help might be to move the router into a better position (if possible) minimulising the amount of walls/doors it has to go through, make sure there is nothign that can interfere with it too much (cordless phones / microwaves etc...) are near it and maybe download the latest drivers / firmware for your wirless card / router.

There is just one door and it is open. Thanks!

The internet is back to being REALLY slow (I meen as slow as dial-up). Does anyone have any ideas? I am using a Linksys router.

hmm, im not sure what it is, unless your ISP is F*cking up somewhere :P

maybe try contacting them about it...

are you trying to use it at "Peak" times? i.e. when most people use their internet (like 4:00pm to 9:00pm or whatever) cause if you are that might be the issue as someone somewhere might be leaching bandwidth, not sure though :S lol.

Our neighbors across the street use the same ISP. Could that be a problem? Thanks!

if its going slow without the router you've eliminated one thing it could be, if you have a wireless computer, have you tried another network to see if its your computer. If its faster than its your ISP if not then its probably your computer.

As I understand it torrents use many connections to download files, perhaps you have too many connections (even if they are going at .05kb/s) does that start up when your computer does?

Are you sure you are connnected to yours and they dont have one with the same name? Stupid as that sounds i have had several clients do that..

We do have the same network name, but I am in the basement and there is only one network that I can reach. We called the neighbors to ask how they're speed is and they said that it is fast. Thanks!

No that shouldn't be a problem with neighbours useing same ISP

well it can be a problem (unless im COMPLETELY wrong lol), but ISP's tend to share say a 100mb/s line through X amount of households and if everyone is using their internet at the same time youre gonna recieve a slower speed than if youre the only household using the internet. this is just a cheaper way for the ISP to supply internet lol.

That makes sense, at night time it is a lot slower than daytime and the neighbor uses the internet at night. Thanks!

but you called your neighbor and they said it was fast. It would effect everyone, and the complaints would make the ISP supply more speed.

Can you go to www.speedtest.net and report your download and upload speeds (try more than one close geographical server). Just so we can see exactly how slow it is going compared to what your ISP is supposed to be offering.
