Soso performance 4870

Hey everyone. I just purchased a visiontek 4870 from bestbuy, amazingly for only 300 after tax(close to newegg). I got home and installed the card, installed cat 8.7 and played cod 4.. Wow the frames were way higher than my previous card 8800gts320meg. I was happy so I decided to go get crysis from walmart at midnight lol. Installed played on all high 1440X900 I was happy with what I saw looked great. Then I go to benchmark the next day I set it to all high no aa/af dx9. 1440x960(strange res that they gave me) Averaged 44.3 fps after 3 loops. now I guess i could be acting spoiled but online techspot.com said that they got 53 frames... So where are my 10 frames? The benches were done at 3ghz on a Q6600 and an E8400 on techspot. when I oced to 3ghz I got 47 frames average.. Am I missing something? are there still remnants of the nvidia drivers even though I cleaned them auto/manual? Some input would be nice. Thanks guys

E6600 2.4 44fps 3.0 47fps
4gb ddrII 800
visiontek 4870 stock
corsair HX620
samsung 932bw 19''

Yeah, wow you're being way too picky about this. No two chips are exactly alike. They were probably using a different motherboard. Make sure you have the latest drivers. Did techspot overclock the 4870? 6 fps difference is miniscule, don't sweat it.

I know Im being picky.. but I just feel as though my pc isnt performing upto par. Would a Q9550 drasticly help my fps? Would going back to xpsp3 help over vista sp1? Im trying to prepare for farcry 2. See but the wierd thing I turn shadows to medium. postproc to low and particles to low and I gain 1 fps??? That doesnt make any sense. Anyone think I should return this for a gtx 260? Thanks for your input

Don't bother comparing your pc with somebody else, 2 pc's aren't the same even if they have the same components.

If you return it for a 260 you will be dissapointed, believe me

could someone answer my cpu/windows question just because I really want to get more out of my computer. Itll be my last yeah of gaming because then college starts and my dorm wont be big enough for a full tower. Ill game at home(it wont go to waste) but im going to get a macbook for on campus computing. What im saying is I really want to be able to enjoy farcry 2 and my last year of pc gaming. My max budget is 500. Thanks guys

What were the specs of their system compared to theirs?

As far as I know, XPsp3 isnt going to use as many resources compared to Vista, so that may free up just a little bit, but I dont think youll be getting 10fps by switching.

Why is this your last year for gaming?

http://www.techspot.com/review/108-visiontek-radeon-4870/page3.html specs of the computer they used. Its my last year because college will be crazy and busy and I dont need to have distractions other than booz/girls/green. Im leaning towards a Q9550.. I could oc it to 3.2 and be set for a while. Do you guys think it would help me get more performance out of my 4870? Im trying to be able to enjoy farcry 2. Ill still game after college and in the summers so I guess Im in a way lying in saying its my last year but life must go on and gaming becomes for me like weed is to my brother, something that holds me back and consumes too much of my time:D. Anyways thanks everyone for your input. Please let my know what you think

So I fixed my problem. I went back to XPsp2. All high same test with my cpu overclocked to 3.0 = 50.97 frames. Then when I overclocked my 4870 to 790/1100 and put motion blurr off I got 59 frames average. Im so happy now. yay. Ill be buying the Q9550 tomorrow. Well see if it does anything for me :)

that sounds good... but my psu would be working over time and I dont have the money for another and a psu.. well I do but.. I think getting a quad would be smart because farcry2 is quad ready and said to run better on a quad. Anyone know when the new nvidia cards are coming out? or when the 280 gtx's will be around 300,350 because I will take the 4870 back to bestbuy and get my money back. I feel bad doing this but bestbuy makes enough money. Any thoughts???

they make too much money, they want 100 dollars for a radeon 3450($35 at newegg) i would wait until the end of september, prices are expected to drop then

well Im being serious.. I mean if a new generation card comes out, or the prices cuts on the gtx 280 are significant then I would def be tempted to return my card. I have until september 18th which I hope isnt too early. I want to really enjoy farcry 2. what does nvidia's line-up look like in terms of newer faster card (could kill gtx280)?

wudnt the game look worse in XP then it does in vista? with the whole DX9 vs DX10 business? pls tell me Im right for once lol

At your resolution, there is no point getting anything better as the memory bandwidth will not be used. Just OC the bastard...

is there a large difference between a quad core and dual for gaming. I understand that 4 is better than 2, but can games even use more than one processor

In terms of "large difference", no, but increasingly games (e.g. crysis etc) will become multithreaded and this is future proof option. Games definately can use more than 1 core if you consider that the computer has many things going on, not just the game, so the question is - will gaming performance improve with more than 2 cores?

Simple answer, increasingly yes. If you look at pure benchmarks, i think the E8400 is still up there, but my choice for a new CPU would be a Q6600/Q9450. If you do anything that requires encoding etc, you win.

From my reading, multithreading will become hardware enabled soon, rather than the current software requirement.

I wouldn't worry about not taking your computer to college. I upgraded my HP mid-tower and it fit's very nicely in my dorm. People stuff their suburbans when moving into college, and two of those usually fit into a dorm. I don't think you need to worry about finding room for your computer. And in terms of time, I'm taking 16 credits this semester, avg 3 hours a day. That is 4 hours less per day than high school. So unless you're going to party 4 hours a day, I wouldn't find this too much of a problem. Haha just my little insight, I'm finishing my first week at the University of Arizona. Prettyyy niceeee =D
