This happens when Security Center has been set not to alert you about the status of your antivirus program (to change this setting, click on Start -> Control Panel -> Security Center -> Change the way Security Center alerts me) and tick Antivirus. It is possible for malware to change this setting to stop you knowing that your antivirus has been disabled, but there are also a number of perfectly innocent explanations - some security suites will even disable this to stop you from receiving redundant warnings if definitions are out of date.

If you're concerned it might be malicious you can post a HijackThis log. See http://www.computerforum.com/24672-hijackthis-logs.html for instructions on how to do this.

For which program? Spybot? Windows? Are you receiving any particular error message?

Well the reason I shut it off is because I try to run updates but they never install. This has been going on since I brought my computer to a place to have it fixed. When I got it home it said I had about 75 updates. When I tried to dl and install, it failed. I went through and tried to manually install them. Some didn't work so I chose to ignore updates. Any one know what that guy might have done?

Try this:

  • Download Dial-a-fix and extract it to its own folder.
  • Double click on Dial-a-fix.exe
  • Check the Fix Windows Update and make sure the three boxes underneath it are also checked. Leave all the other options as they are.
  • Click the Go button.
  • Click on Exit and see if this has fixed the problem
