Thats awesome news. Its great how steam is being innovative (in other ways as well) and pushing the industry forward. I imagine performance wont be great (to start out) but this could even create a new market for video cards on the mac platform. Regardless of what happens, this is a good thing and has a chance of giving a huge boost to apple. I know tons of people (myself somewhat included) who don't use apple simply because of its lack of gaming support.
next up is DirectX 11 for Mac
if only... then i might buy a mac.
If they've made the jump to Mac, Linux can't be too far behind. That'll be pretty awesome. I'd wager quite a few people on here would make the switch.
Apple doesn't use DX, it uses Open GL and Core Animation, both available to developers to take advantage of.
DX is a proprietary set of APIs for Windows only.
I figured, if they're porting it over to Mac it's using OpenGL and other mostly open-source jazz (I know of no proprietary gaming APIs or anything like that on Macs) that's already available on Linux, and since Mac itself is Unix-based... it would take nowhere near the effort. It took Apple getting a 10% market share for anyone to start jumping ship, with a few exceptions. Linux has just under a 2% market share. Don't see them doing it anytime soon.
i really dont' think this will change things much.
ok, so macs can play games now, but a true gamer will still go with pc simply because it's cheaper and highly customizable.
