Steam comes to the Apple platform

Now only if the video card market was more fair for Macs, and not closed. I cannot even update my video card drivers on my mac with out going through Apple first. I understand they want quality control, but I mean come one, Nvidia and ATI have been doing this for a while now and I think they got the hang of it.

Thats awesome news. Its great how steam is being innovative (in other ways as well) and pushing the industry forward. I imagine performance wont be great (to start out) but this could even create a new market for video cards on the mac platform. Regardless of what happens, this is a good thing and has a chance of giving a huge boost to apple. I know tons of people (myself somewhat included) who don't use apple simply because of its lack of gaming support.

Totally agree with what he says, looks like we can no longer say i wont buy a mac because im a gamer :D

Damn immagine having the OSX os as our primary os...and still be able to game!

Lets just hope they start producing more graphics card for macs.

i really dont' think this will change things much.

ok, so macs can play games now, but a true gamer will still go with pc simply because it's cheaper and highly customizable.

still pretty cool, though. more power to teh mac!

next up is DirectX 11 for Mac :P

if only... then i might buy a mac.

Apple doesn't use DX, it uses Open GL and Core Animation, both available to developers to take advantage of.

DX is a proprietary set of APIs for Windows only.

If they've made the jump to Mac, Linux can't be too far behind. That'll be pretty awesome. I'd wager quite a few people on here would make the switch.

It took Apple getting a 10% market share for anyone to start jumping ship, with a few exceptions. Linux has just under a 2% market share. Don't see them doing it anytime soon.

This is good news, about 4 years to late for me, but still. Obviously with the price of the mac pro's there's not going to be the same gamer following as pc's, but having access to more than football manager for your £2000 is a nice touch, and come switch over time in another 3 or 4 years It'll be a decent selling point for me.

But on the other hand, osx has been a total bitch lately!

I figured, if they're porting it over to Mac it's using OpenGL and other mostly open-source jazz (I know of no proprietary gaming APIs or anything like that on Macs) that's already available on Linux, and since Mac itself is Unix-based... it would take nowhere near the effort.

Although, I suppose you're going to have hard time convincing server admins and all mini-Stallmans out there that Steam coming to Linux would be a good thing :/

hmmm... Team Fortress 2 on a iPad. I'm sure that'll work. :D

Either way, I think its cool. I like the way apple pc's look, and I'm sure they work pretty good.
So far i've stuck with windows because it worked, and I couldn't be bothered trying something else.

True gamers are a niche market, as there are more casual gamers. Also, lets hope it opens the door for more video card options. Plus in the end, it is not like Apple puts low end parts in their Macs, and remember you can have the best hardware in the world but if you OS can't handle it, then it is a waste of resources.

Lets just all admit it. true gamers are a bunch of weirdo's who take games waaayy too serious.
(just like soccer hooligans take their game way to serious. altough, i dont see a bunch of WoW fans beating the crap out of eachother jsut because they play on different sides. :P )

Mac's are quality machines, no doubt there. (obiously with their pricetag they better be! ) I'm curious how well they will perform with games really.

I also have to admit tough, I really like Windows 7 so far. Much, much better than Vista.
