suggest a really good PSU

Hi, a friend of mine is looking for a good psu for a core 2 duo, he doesnt play games so wont be getting two gpu's, perfers quite psu rather then overwhelmingly powerful psu and would like it if you can suggest a psu that you've used or are currently using, not word of mouth.

the 620 and 520 watt corsair psu's with modular cables are supposed to be really good, read some reviews

Budget?

Look at the Seasonic (or Seasonic based) units for quality, quiet PSUs. If you want absolute silence, the XG Magnums, Siverstone NightJars and FSP Zens are good. If you mean 'cheap but relatively quiet', PSUs with a 120mm fan will be quieter than those with an 80mm.

That's going to limit things...

I know the budget isnt all that big so I shouldnt be complaning about your choice, and there arnt many but there seems to be a few comments about how it crash's or even crashed the whole computer... should I be worried?

No. Most reviewers don't know what they are saying, and blame the PSU for a motherboard gone bad, for instance.

While Jet's generally correct about newegg reviews, I have heard reliable reports of QC issues with the Smartpower series. In any case, there are much better PSUs, IMO, particularly if you're looking for low noise.

For me this would be a reasonably easy choice: Enhance 5150GH.

There's also the Seasonic S12-380W

i've taken an interest in seasonic but one thing though... most of the 12v lines are less then 15a. for instance your suggestion has 10a, and 15a.. but that wouldnt matter if I could use the 12v2, can I even do that? for instance instead of using the 12v1 to connect to my gpu can I just ignore that one and hook up the 12v2?

also for a core 2 duo setup how much do you think you'll have to spend for a single gpu connected psu, for a decent one atleast

+12V2 = CPU, +12V1 = Everything Else

I'd go as low as $40 with the XClio 450BL (assuming that single GPU isn't an enormously power hungry one), that's still a very high quality unit.

well from my experience, not many of them aren't power hungry, but core 2 duo's are still very large, and do take more power than say, a 2800 sempy... seasonic is good, but for a core 2 duo i wouldnt recommend it, maybe a 500 watt seasonic?
