every time i login all i see the the wallpaper.. all the icons and start bar.. and the task bar is gone.. nothing..
i can go to task manager and run programs and then i can type in explorer into the run window and it all pops up again.. but i have to do that EVERY time i login... so how do i get it back?

Have you installed any softwares lately which may have caused this? or it may be worth doing a virus/malware scan , chkdisk, defrag etc and maybe even a system restore back to before you noticed the problem ;)

Well i think my problem might be easy to fix.
it seems that after i login that my system doesn't automatically run explorer.exe

why is that, and how can i fix it?

because once i run it, my system is back as good as new

firstly go to command line and do sfc /scannow (you will need your windows cd)

that will check for missing/corrupt system files

Right I found this on another forum(wont say which one bacause against rules)
this is what was posted:-

I had this problem and at last found solution!
If it is the same what in my case, try:

open registry (menu Start -> run (or run Comand prompt): regedit).

open: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft\ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Winlogon

At right pane there is "Shell". The value of it must be "explorer.exe" (and nothing more - in my case there was activedebugger.exe too, when I removed it explorer start appear on startup).
I can't verify if this works but you can always reverse it if it doesn't ;)

The value is explorer.exe

and i don't have a windows cd. this junker is a dell ordered online

can you borrow one? or I believe if you have a valid product key you can legally download one from M$ or other site(I may be wrong so please don't shoot me down mods!!! [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]

i'm just giving up and doing a System restore.. to a date that it worked.. once there i will rescan comp for virus and such. Wish me luck! haha

System restore did not work. It said nothing has changed since that date.. but the date was the day before my issues started to happen

is there a simple way of creating a new or alternate way for explorer.exe to automatically run at boot?

youll have to play around with the registry then (with pro you can set startup programs, default shell etc.... with Group Policy)

do what that other guy said first

open registry (menu Start -> run (or run Comand prompt): regedit).

open: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft\ Windows NT \ Current Version \ Winlogon

At right pane there is "Shell". The value of it must be "explorer.exe"
