well, i got all the parts that i ordered from newegg today and i was extremely excited with to play with my news toys. anyways, as i put everything together and turned the system on just to get a CPU failed system check. "damn!"

so, i went thru the asus manual and it said to check that the CPU was installed properly. so, i took the heatsink and fan off the CPU. when i then took out the CPU, and looked at it more closely, i noticed that some of the pins were bent. i decided to try and straightem them all out and think i did a fairly good job of doing so, but i am affraid that i may have fried (static electricity?) my new $267 processor in the process of doing so, as i still get the same error message when trying to boot the system.

any ideas? please tell me that i am not out of my $267! :(

I think there are issues with that Asus board and that CPU. I think there is a BIOS update. Check with others.

that's why o posted here. i know there is an issue with that bored and winchester based processors, i haven't here about any problems with the newcastle though. i hope preator sees this and can give more input on that since we have the same processor and board. thanks for the input! :)

i just checked asus's site regarding the possibility of needing a bios upgrade. according to asus this is not the case. i am gonna send newegg an email when i get home and see what they say. hopefully i can exchange it for a new one.

you can rma it, it never worked when you got it. it fit in the socket so bent pins were a non factor originally

yeah, i just started the rma process, will be sending it back tomorrow. hopefully all works out for the best.

well, i just got my replacement cpu in the mail today. i dropped it in and i still get the same thing when i try to power up... "System Failed CPU Test"

i am at a loss of words and quite bummed out, to say the least. :(

anyone have any thoughts as to where my problem might be?

Didnt you order like a few months back?

Details would be useful ....

No such issues that I've encountered. Can you post the code that's on the actual chip (ok not the chip, the heatspreader :P)?

Next step would be to look at having the mobo RMA'd

the code that "was" one the chip (should have a thing layer of thernal cooling paste on it now) is as follows...

ADA3500DEP4AW
CBAXC 0437SPDW (that S may have been a 5)
1077724I41503

before i went to work last night i started a desperate attempt. i took out the cmos battery and set the jumper for it to clear. i am about to put the battery back in and change the jumper back and see what happens. i doubt that will solve it, but who knows.

i really don't feel as though the motherboard is the problem, but i may try and RMA that as well. the thing is, if it is the processor that is bad, by the time i get the new mobo, i may be past the 30 day guarantee that newegg gives already. it takes about 2 weeks for packages to get here from the states on average.

and btw, you are right, i made the intial purchase about a month and a half ago.

Ok you're running the same rev chip as me so definitely no possibility if these "Winchester problems"

Are you certain power problems arent an issue? :)

i have actually thought of the power issue as well. i hoped to be fine with my old 300W PSU for now and i doubt that's the cause of at least the present issue. with just the motherboard, cpu w/cooler, RAM and the graphics hooked up, it still comes up with the same error. i even tried it with my old GeForce 2 MX 400 in there instead of the 6600GT, as the 6600GT requires a good bit of power in it's own. but regardless, i have been looking into PSU's and will purchase a better one in the not to distant future.

i am thinking about going out and buying another A8V locally. it'd be more expensive, but it would save me a good bit of time, just to be on the safe side and still be able to exchange cpu threw newegg. i'd rather have a $100 loss, then a $270 loss. :)

I suspect this is a no-name PSU?

Good call. Have a look at the MSI K8N Neo2 Plat as well :)

nope, i won't be purchasing another MSI board for a while. they seem to perform very well, but also die young. this machine that i am on now has a old asus board in it and hasn't ever given me any problems, nor have any of the asus boards i have owned in the past. the only alternative i will consider is the abit av8. :)

the PSU in the new system is a no name product as far as i can tell. however, i did not have any power problems with the system it was powering before and i used it to the fullest. lol it may be a power issue though, who knows?

anyways, i'll be doing some motherboard shopping later on this afternoon. :)

i just tried it with the hdd and dvd-rw unhooked. unless the cpu in itself needs more power than the PSU can supply, i doubt that my problem lies there.

Wouldnt reccomend that either ... VIA trés sux0rs
why do you say that? same chipset as both our boards are based on. then what do you recommend?

if i didn't just purchase that GeForce 6600GT AGP card, i would most likely get one of the newer nforce4 boards.

And i regret buying this board.... i woulda got the K8N Neo2 ... still might.

VIA Apollo > all That had to be one of the best chipsets I've ever had. Even though it was on the old S423 boards it was still an amazing chipset.

we have lift off!!! running strong at 2208.5 Mhz!!! :D

i am not gonna tell you all what it was, as i feel kind of stupid to have missed something so simple in my frustration (12V power cable, doh! shh!). all that matters though is that it works now and i am very happy with it. performance wise, i am very impressed so far. :)
