would i be better off on a better processor than such a insane vid card?

Depends what you're using the system for. Are you a heavy gamer? If so, a 7800GTX may not be a bad choice for you, if you're willing to spend the large amount of money. However, if you're a casual gamer, and rely more on speedy applications, then you'd probably be better off getting a cheaper card such as a 6800GT, which will still perform great in newer games for a while.

You're going to want a better power supply. Get at least a 450W since you have that powerful video card, and especially if you think you might go with SLI in the future.

Go with the antec neopower and AMD 3000+. The 3800+ and 3000+ run at the same cache and have the same core. What does this mean? The 3000+ can be overclocked to the same ghz as the 3800+ and all the way up to 2.8 ghz in some cases. Saves lots of money and isnt very difficult!

ye quite good but a msi 7800 gtx is only about $70 dollas more then a 6800 gt better of in teh long run i say

The MSI 7800GTX is more like $170 more.

Also, if you're really into first person shooters, I might suggest going with an 8ms monitor instead of a 12ms one.

I see nothing wrong with your original setup except the hard drive. If you can afford it, go for the first setup with perhaps a decent ata-133 or ata-150 drive. SATA II (ATA-300)is even better.

well.. the 6800GT takes more as the 7800GTX.
( minimum for a 7800GTX is about 400 / 450W. minimum for a 6800GT is 500/550W
