Too Much RAM?

I just bought the items below and the specs of the motherboard said it would support 4G of RAM (it has 6 slots). I just ended up getting 1G for now until I get everything up and going.

GIGABYTE GA-8GPNXP DUO 915P 775
Intel P4/3.2GHz 800M LGA775
Corsair DDRAM 1GB TWINX1024-3200C2PT

Is there such thing as too much ram?

No and Yes. You could put as much ram in as your motherboard will support, in other words 4 gigs for you. I would love to have 4 gigs of ram... :D

Unless you running a server the difference between 2gig and 4gig of ram wont be notice. Hell the difference between 1gig and 2gig will only be noticed if you doing a lot of things that require heavy ram usage. Increasing ram only increases performance if you using the extra ram,

At this point, 4 gigs of Ram could only be described by two words: OVER KILL. Of course there are always exceptions, like servers, but you don't have a server and no program that your computer could run could use 4 gigs.

Or

You would a lot of RAM to be able to play games that require huge textures such as some flight sims. I had 512 before. Moved to 1024 and hell that was a difference. I suppose that a move to 2gigs would ensure that the computer, especially during demanding applications, will have more than it will need. As to 4 gigs...why not? I just don't really see the point other than to show off for a normal user. My friend as 4 gigs of RAM....

Ahhhh, the ole "I've got four gigs of ram and you only have 512M! Ha Ha Ha Ha!"

If you're making a computer that's just going to surf the 'net and make Word documents, 256-512mb would be fine. 1gb is for gaming or heavy app (CAD, photoshop) computers. Anything higher than that is for servers.

Sure. If you're configuring a system for maximizing memory bandwidth, filling all the DIMMS would result in a clock-drop :)

1GB isnt enough for certaing gaming configurations (try running Doom3/UT2004 at high settings using just physical memory to get away with this you need 1.5-2GB). As for heavy graphics, the more the better .... when you get super-serious stuff they have renderfarms :)

I knew there was a reason I got 2gb of ram when every told me I did not need it :)

Maybe now, but in the future you will need 2-4gb of ram.
