alright i think im just going to buy a new CPU then. is there any way to prove 100% this is my problem? i dont want to waiste 60-100 bucks on this if its not. would anything else have fried posibly from this too?
I read your post between PC Eye and yourself about this mishap. I am wondering, just for fun sake... are you getting anything on the monitor when you boot the computer up?
You mentioned in your threads/post that the computer doesn't show any IDE/CD-ROM drives at all.. this means the CPU is working if you get a screen showing you a BIOS setting. Otherwise, it wouldn't show you anything.
If you boot the computer up and you press "Del" or "ESC" to go into the setup/BIOS then chances are your CPU is fine.
However, if not... then you probably have ruined your CPU and who knows if the mobo got damaged. Chances are slim that it has. If you get nothing, the fans spin, and there isn't a picture on your monitor... then chances are the processor isn't working. Is there beeps? Depending on the manufacture of the computer... and the mobo... there would be some beeps.
Getting to your drive issue, it's possible that the BIOS might not be able to see the DVD-RW drive, slight chance of course... but if you can see the BIOS and not DVD... present in there... and you attached the connectors correctly.
Let's step back.
You boot up the computer, you get a picture. You're in the setup. You see only one CD rom drive. The cables are all connected.
You shut the computer, attach the ribbon IDE cable to the new drive. It's set to slave, for the CD-rom (the original one) is set to MASTER. Set the new drive to SLA slave, on the same ribbon cable. If it still doesn't see the drive, my only advise is that the system can't read it. Although it's hardly the issue.
Just my 2 cents.
