Trouble installing DVD drive.

alright i think im just going to buy a new CPU then. is there any way to prove 100% this is my problem? i dont want to waiste 60-100 bucks on this if its not. would anything else have fried posibly from this too?

I read your post between PC Eye and yourself about this mishap. I am wondering, just for fun sake... are you getting anything on the monitor when you boot the computer up?

You mentioned in your threads/post that the computer doesn't show any IDE/CD-ROM drives at all.. this means the CPU is working if you get a screen showing you a BIOS setting. Otherwise, it wouldn't show you anything.

If you boot the computer up and you press "Del" or "ESC" to go into the setup/BIOS then chances are your CPU is fine.

However, if not... then you probably have ruined your CPU and who knows if the mobo got damaged. Chances are slim that it has. If you get nothing, the fans spin, and there isn't a picture on your monitor... then chances are the processor isn't working. Is there beeps? Depending on the manufacture of the computer... and the mobo... there would be some beeps.

Getting to your drive issue, it's possible that the BIOS might not be able to see the DVD-RW drive, slight chance of course... but if you can see the BIOS and not DVD... present in there... and you attached the connectors correctly.

Let's step back.

You boot up the computer, you get a picture. You're in the setup. You see only one CD rom drive. The cables are all connected.

You shut the computer, attach the ribbon IDE cable to the new drive. It's set to slave, for the CD-rom (the original one) is set to MASTER. Set the new drive to SLA slave, on the same ribbon cable. If it still doesn't see the drive, my only advise is that the system can't read it. Although it's hardly the issue.

Just my 2 cents.

Actually the monitor does not show up at all. The CPU fan spins, and im guessing there is nothing wrong with the drive itself. Im judging if the drive works by when the LED light on it turns on. When the IDE cable is plugged in, it (for some reason) doesn't light up. But when the IDE cable is not in, it does light up.

So sounds like a CPU issue?

WRONG! As mentioned earlier a cpu failure usually sets off an audio alert with a continuous beeping or you see an onscreen message saying "cpu failure". The board is getting power for fans and the drives go direct to the supply. The only thing left is the four wire 12v cpu plug if not plugged in to see a stall.

Otherwise you are more then likely seeing a board fault unless there a slight arc with the cpu pin just enough to prevent a fail message? The drive not lighting while plugged suggests something may be grounding out. Did you remove the board at any point or loosen it up any?

Nope i never touched the board at all. Although i did take out the 4 prong power cord for the MOBO. It is plugged back in though.

When you say grounded out what exactly does that mean? And the slight CPU pin thing you say is quite possible im guessing. Since i did have to bend 3 or 4 back then there could be a chance one is not making proper connection.

If the pin socket was stretched out a little making it somewhat loose the contact with the cpu pin could have been lost. But you wouldn't be seeing the problems with the two optical drives when plugging the ide cable in. If something else let go on the board that could be now seeing a short to ground pulling the power away from the drives. If the drive are on the second and not first cable try slaving one to the hard drive if that is also an ide drive.
