Ubuntu 11.10

So I don't know if anyone gave 11.10 a go around yet but I installed the Beta last night and it is currently installing the updates for the final release which unless you do the beta will not be ready until tomorrow.

My opinion is...... well better then 11.04. I have been doing some reading where Mark Shuttleworth know's he lost a lot of users with 11.04 due to a unfinished looking U/I and with 11.10 there has some pleasant additions to fine tunning Unity. I still think it is not there yet and from what I read that with 12.04 LTS that the U/I will be as they intended.

All there really is to say about 11.10 is that it is a nicer looking U/I, a new look for the software center and the one thing that Linux users hate is less customization which I think we all seen with Ubuntu leaning closer to being user friendly like M$ Windows and Apple.
 
I am excited for 12.04 and I keep hearing that is going to a rolling release cycle which I am unsure how I feel about that.
 
I hope the problems that people are having get fixed by 12.04 I am thinking about going to Xubuntu or something else if this continues. I'll probably give it a try on a spare desktop when I get the chance.

What problems where people having or are you talking about the U/I?

xubuntu looks nice but I do not see a 64 bit edition and for me Kubuntu is not a option cause I have always had U/I glitches in there KDE edition.
 
Im on 11.04 and actually love it... even though a lot of other people seem to hate it. Will there be an upgrade option for us 11.04 people?

The complaints mainly come from people that used Ubuntu back a few years ago. They just complain that it is bloated and does not run as well as it used to. I am kind of on board with this. I don't really want to leave 10.04 since I liked how fast it was compared to windows. When I tried 11.04 it was not nearly as snappy as I wanted it to be.

I am on the fence about Unity as well. I like the idea but I find it far less intuitive to use. I found myself searching for programs that I knew were in the system but I could not find them in the menu. I did a lot of command line launching of programs.

Well 11.10 is released...I'm not liking the fact that they moved the Ubuntu menu to the sidebar, and I haven't installed it yet.
I'll give it a go later.

This. I do way to much command line work and customizing of my distro to ever feel comfortable using this as my main OS

I have not noticed any real speed differences between 10.04 and 11.10 honestly, maybe 10.04 is a little faster but not horrible noticeable but I will say that both 11.04 and 11.10 run faster and smoother then Windows did for me.

I have been using Ubuntu since 8.04 LTS was released and the one thing I have noticed with it over the years is that Ubuntu is not another Linux Flavor, it is trying to go main stream and I feel they have done very well with this in the fact it may not be perfect but it went with a U/I that separates itself from the hundreds of same looking gnome, KDE, xfce, LXDE and etc. They have made it easy to use and having a great package manger makes it easy for those like members of my family and friends that don't know how to use the command line.

I use Ubuntu cause I need a Windows replacement and Apple does not offer what I want and none of the other Linux Flavors come so nicely packaged out of the box, the only one that came close for me was openSuse 11.4 (grown to love and miss Yast) but to many integrated gpu driver issues where the answer became wait for 12.1 after hours spent in terminal and I said screw it Ubuntu just works. Even with the help for opensuse forums we could not fix the issue.

Because of this many Linux users are starting to hate Ubuntu and I am fine with them hating something going mainstream that just works because they are not the crowd Ubuntu is focused on.
 
i can't tell the diff from 11.04 other than the app menu thingy at the top of the launcher seems to be a little nicer layout, but never really used it b4 so not sure there.

and also whenever i scan for drivers or try to download tem from the site i get nothing and it tries to open gedit for the file, so my stuff stinks, i mean and tat's compared to the 9600se i'm used to so you can imagine my frustration.

so far so good. Have it installed (WUBI), and it is working on the CCC drivers at the moment.

So things I have noticed:
-They changed the login screen again. I like the look of it now. Kinda reminds me of the Metro look of 8.
- It is lagging out a little bit on this laptop. It may be something solved with a update though. 11.04 and 10.04.3 do not lag at all. So the problem isnt the computer.

More to come as I explore this new Ubuntu.

I would not notice it on my own system but I use Ubuntu a lot for running it on older hardware to give life back to laptops that are a bit outdated. On older hardware is where I find the speed differences. I could use Ubuntu on a laptop that was having a trouble with Vista and in some rare cases XP and have them speedy and useful again after loading 9.10 or 10.04 on it. When I tried 11.04 on other systems I found that it took longer boot simple programs that ran smoother on the earlier versions

I completely agree with you here. I have tried a few other distros and I keep coming back to Ubuntu because it just works.

I am not hating on Ubuntu. I just would like to see what was done in 11.04 refined in 11.10 I might not be a fan of the new way they have it, but I can use Ubuntu Classic or switch to something else if I don't like it.

considering 11.04 picked it up and accepted it i think either you're wrong or they are stupid, hopefully it will be the first :P (since my mbr is still screwed so ubuntu is all i got, but also it does all i need)
 
just because it is picked up and accepted does not mean it is supported. Heck, i am running Windows 7 on a Raedon IGP 340m, and its below that 9600se. That does not mean that windows 7 is supported on a IGP340m, just that it will run.
 
no, i mean on 11.04 it installed the driver stuff and let me do the 3d desktop stuff or whatever, but on .10 it can't get any form of driver and even video playback sucks, 360p on youtube gets a little poppy and then 480p is like a fast slideshow.
