Just buy a 2GB stick and put it in the computer, and then you should have 4GB. It's considered optimal to install RAM in sets, but as long as the RAM you have in the computer and the RAM you are going to buy are the same types, then it will work fine. Who told you otherwise? Someone who stood to gain if you bought more?

when you say they have to be the same type, do you mean they both have to be ddr2 or ddr3? or do they both have to be corsair or some same brand?
Well they only have to be capable of running at the same settings, you can put DDR3-1600 10-10-10 in with some DDR3-1333 7-7-7 as there will be a common setting both sticks will run at. Although you are right, it's preferable to have 2 identical sticks.for running in dual channel they must be the same frequency, timings and power usage.
