upgrading ram

My friend has a Dell, and he wanted to upgrade his ram from 512mb to 1 gb. I'm pretty sure it is PC3200, because thats what it says on his ram. Well we bought a 512mb PC3200 stick, and it was 1 pin off! His ram also has 333 on it, and PC2700 ram is 333mhz, so maybe it is PC2700. My question is, is there a 1 pin difference on the different speeds? If not, why is it off by one pin?

I don't quite understand what you mean, it's one pin off...? Did you actually count the pins or what? My suggestion, if it fits in the socket, then it's correct. I'm pretty sure DDR and DDR2 use different connectors. Any DDR memory should be compatable(PC2100, 2700, 3200) but of course you're limited to the slowest chip connected, or whatever the motherboard accepts.

1 pin off ??
i assume you are talking about the notch in DDR
its in every DDR it's just to make it fit in one direction
for example SDR have 2 notches
and there is no RAM without a notch

anyway DDR is 184-pin

sorry, guess I should explain it better. The little slit in the ram that meets with the little slit of plastic in the slot is 1 pin width to the left, so it doesn't quite fit. It will go in on one side or the other, but not both in at the same time because of the slit.

that's a notch
and it's job is to prevent you from putting the RAM the wrong way
it should fit

yea, turn it around, try it the opposite way.
they come in 168-pin (which YOU WOULD KNOW THE DIFFERENCE lol)
184-pin, probably the ram you bought..
and 240-pin.
these are all the desktop pin counts... for laptops theres like 170 something... and 200-pin.
otherwise, you would probably know the difference. then again its a dell, i don't buy pre-built lol
