USB cord ripped out, port broken

I have a Garmin Etrx that I plugged into my computer while it was still attatched to my pants clip. I got up for something and it pulled the computer off the couch, bent the GPS end of the USB to 90 degrees, and ripped the cord out of the port on the computer. After checking to make sure the GPS was fine (still worried), I checked the computer. it seemed fine but I realized one of the USB ports ( the one it was plugged into) isn't working PROPERLY.
When I plug my Garmin into that slot it powered up and said it was connected. But the computer never read it. Nothing popped up, it isn't under computer.
FYI: When the USB cord is plugged into the GPS alone nothing happens, when I connect it to the computer it boots up. Which means the USB is still atleast sending power through. Just no data.

You've ruined the usb port. I wouldn't be using it, it could do some severe damage to laptop or usb device.

So I suppose that's why when I plugged in my phone it started blacking out and saying connected, unconnected, connected, unconnected. And when I unplugged it the USB symbol was still there?

Yup. But like John said, you're better off not using it, otherwise you're likely to seriously damage something.

Simple solution, pick up a $10 Powered USB hub, and connect your devices to your laptop via that. That is assuming you still have at least 1 fully working USB port?

EDIT: Okay so they may be a little more than $10. :P

So the one that went out was 2.0? If so, then you should be okay as its on a different controller.

How do you know whats 3.0 vs 2.0? The ones on the left both have ss on them. The one that went out also has a lightning bolt. ANOTHER one is on the right side, and that has nothing special.
