VERY high temps - xfx 6800gt

Hi all,

I have a XFX 6800GT and have noticed that the temps are very, very high

For example, my computer has been on for about 2 hours, I have not been on ANY games, just MSN and browsing the net. But the GPU core has been running at 75*c and the ambient temp is 51*c (its been on 74*c-75*c the whole time, the temps are not fluctuating much). They have been like this since I have turned my computer on..... (This is not a one off it is always like this)

Now when I play a game the GPU temp reaches 105*c +... (the slowdown threshold is at 127*c).

I have been having some problems with my computer locking up to, which I think may be caused by these high temperatures. I have an Antec P180 which is a very nice, large case. I have 3 large fans in this case as well as one on the CPU and another one just above my graphics card. The heat sink on the card is clean and not covered in dust, neither is the fan, so why are the temps getting so hot and how can I lower them???

ADDED:

(Other temps are fine in the computer its just the card that’s getting hot)

you might want to double check your fans make sure all of them are working i dunno if you did this already or not...make sure the gpu fan is running...i've heard with those graphics cards there's a tool you can use to configure the fan speeds (i know ATI has one that comes with the cards) not 100% sure about the nvidia cards but you should search around google for something of this sort...also if you have a side panel you should remove that and run the pc for about 30 minutes and see if them temps drop that would tell you you're not getting enough ventilation in the case....this sounds dumb but i had a power supply fan go out once and the temps in my pc went up about 20 degrees...oh and how you say your pc locks up from time to time with the overheating issue some virus's will do this so you might wanna boot in safe mode and do a full system scan just to be safe

You could always buy an NVSilencer, that might cure it (if you know the problem is the cooling itself, and not a default of the PCB or actual GPU of the Card.

place a exhaust fan in the front of the case, and make sure the cooler fan can take the air from right outside the case, i have my fxf 6800GT running at 450/1100 atm, with similar temps as your's, so it really helps :)

Thanks for all the replies :)

I have tried running the computer without the side panel before and as far as I can remember the temps did not really drop, but i ll try it again and see.

When the PC locks up it just freezes and I get this high pitched noise coming out of my speakers, I know this might sound like Creative’s “squeal of death” but I have removed the sound card before and it still does it.

All the fans in my case are working so I don’t think that’s causing the high temps because my CPU temp is normal.

I also read somewhere that the fan on the card can be slowed down so it they run quieter, so i ll look into that a bit more.

I don’t think it’s a virus causing the computer to lock up, I don’t really download, I have a good antivirus and the computer still locks up even when I have reformatted (which I have done many of times). So I don’t think its a virus causing it but I will run a scan to make sure.

If the temps don’t decrease I think I will purchase some new fans for the graphics card and get an exhaust blower like you suggested.

I ll post a bit later to tell you what happens when I run the computer with the case off, thanks all :)

also if you have a side panel you should remove that and run the pc for about 30 minutes and see if them temps drop that would tell you you're not getting enough ventilation in the case....

OK now things are getting weird, I have just been running my computer with the side panel off just as you said, all I am doing is talking on MSN and browsing the net.

Before I took the side off the GPU core temp was consistently 74*c. With the panel off its gone up to 80*c and is not fluctuating, wtf?

Well, think logically... It's summer... Therefore that means it's hot... Therefore the hot air will be inside the PC (because the side panel is open).

I would think about getting the NVSilencer for your card model... They're not very expensive, and if it doesn't help, well, it's not as if you just spent $100, eh...

Its not that warm in my bedroom, but obviously its making a difference. I have just downloaded Nvidia’s Ntune and increased the graphic cards fan speed to 100%, as they were on 50%. As we speak I am on a game and I am getting 90*c, so a bit cooler, but still hot :(

I have an SLI system, but only have one card enabled, (it still locks up with 2 enabled) I dont think the NVsilencer would fit in between the cards as it looks chunky or will it?

Well i had a problem with my card overheating i have a X850 Pro but the card was messed up (they put the fan on the wrong part of the card) well they re-made the entire card but it out there witht he same name on the store shelves

anywho i have the first and horrible model so i had to fix its overheating problem

Step one i found my cards fans were only running at 50% (fan on card)
so i used a program to boost that up i dont know what you would use but for ATI people i used http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Video-Tweak/ATI-Tray-Tools.shtml
which can overclock and can change fan speed

Step two this helped but didnt fix it so i needed more fans well my case is supposed to have like 4 fans on case i have about 6

and now its http://www.filelodge.com/files/room14/341759/Picture035.jpg

2 on mobo one on graphics card and 2 on power supply and mroe but i dont wanna go on

so after add all these fans i need a bigger power supply so i would check that if you get more fans

Third i add memory things like such http://www.filelodge.com/files/room14/341759/Picture036.jpg

so any to sum this up

1. check fan spead on card

2. add fans

3. Get memmory sinks things

GL :D

I am sorry, but that logic is halarious!
But anyways, i think the increase of tempature is because you disrupt the airflow in your case with the side panel off. Have you ever taken the coolor off and stuck it back on?

Thanks for the replies,

I have just been on some games now and the temps are still reaching 105+ I have increased the cards fan speed and its not made much difference

I am going to take my computer apart again and give the card a clean, but I have not long done it so cant see it doing anything.

wo wo woo

hold on a sec how about this

take a pic of the computer with side pannel off

and show direction of all fans in blue with paint for something

and all fans in red

this can help us ALL figure the proglem out a little better

Right ok I have taken some snaps like you told me to.

The first one shows the whole case, so you can see where all the fans are, the link is....

This one shows you the fan that is under the large black box. The box is an air duct which is hollow, the air is then blown out of the back of the case, the link:

This one shows the front of the case, the link;

This one shows the back of the case...

And finally this shows where the case is in my room...

Hope these help :)

Easier said than done lol :(

I ll have to go and buy some

thanks for the reply :)

Added:

OK I have cleaned all the wires up just like you said, but its still not much better ( I have not got any cable ties thats why its not all neat and tidy, but its alot better than wot it was ) :)

Im going to try and get my hands on a NVsilencer 2moz, so if I manage to get one I ll post and tell you if its any better

Added:

They did not have any in the computer shop so I have ordered one off the net, should be here Friday, will let you know if it does any good :)

Thanks!

Looks like the NVsilencer has done the job :D

Temps are now down to 60*c and only going to 85*c when im playing games!!!:D

Thanks for all the replys! :D

Those temps are still a little high, make sure you have good airflow through your case and that it is blowing air in from the front and out the back. keep your side panel on because with it off you have virtually no airflow through your case. And make sure all your fans are at at least close to 100%.

i agree wit bball4life you need to clean up the case, or get a new one, preferrably with a lot of empty space in it
