Vista, worth it?

I know there have been alot of threads on this and to be honest im to lazy too look for them.

I hear from alot of people that vista is good, and from alot of people that they have alot of problems with it ie blue screens and crashes.

So what i am asking is, is it good//safe?

i used vista on a laptop for about a year, and theres no real benefit to switch from xp to vista IMO, microsoft has appearently extended xp till 7/09 on computers from suppliers, so you can pretty much just skip right over vista and wait for windows 7.
vista worked pretty decent for me, but you'll need a good processor and alot of memory i'd say no less than 3 gigs.

Yes. Not much more than XP, but in terms of usability, reliability and/or safety it's at least as good as XP, granted it takes a lot more resources to run. Some features of Vista I really like over thsoe of XP, but like I said in the other thread, personally either is good and the only reason I'm using vista is because nowadays all computers come with it.

If you're planning on buying a retail computer, Vista is pretty much your only option unless you get a netbook. If you're building a computer, any half-decent fairly new build would/should be able of runnin Vista - a if you can run it, there's no reason to go for it. If you have an older computer... would you post some specs, please? Usually it comes down to personal preference and whether your system can run it or not.

Vista for me has been great. Nice and fast and clean/slick look. DX10 is also a plus. Search is a lot easier as well.

I like Vista...I hate the 32bit versions since I would prefer XP on 32 bit but I use Vista Ultimate x64 and I love it to death.

I have a modest gaming rig but its fantastic once you disable some of the crap that comes pre-loaded with Vista.

If your a advanced user and know how to keep your PC safe I would turn off

System Restore
SuperFetch
Indexing
Windows Defender
UAC

Then go down and disable all the processes you don't need.
http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm is a good site.

It just doesn't work at all.

Sure the idea is GREAT but it loads crap into the memory I never use.
I didn't even notice a loading difference when I disabled it and my hard drive isn't always active now since I disabled it which I don't need Vista helping me to kill the drive by keeping it active 24/7
It is a good idea it was just poorly implemented.
Perhaps it will actually be useful when Windows 7 comes out.

vista worked well for me at first but you've gota learn how to turn off certain functions as they can get quite annoying. after a month or so, it got too many bugs so i switched back to xp, but only because i didnt do a backup of my hdd.

Vista works pretty good for me...I don't know why people think you need 3GBs of RAM to run Vista. I got 1.5 GBs Ram with 1.9Ghz CPU..and so far there's really been no big problems with Vista...Btw..there's no more "Blue screen of Death". There's one BIG thing that Vista does that XP doesn't..and I don't know why no one said it yet...but when there's an error in a program Vista tries to restart the program on it's own(not before saving it tho). So it saves & restarts on errors so you won't lose any work or have to start all over again on whatever you were working on.

As for people saying you need MASSIVE amounts of RAM with a 4Ghz CPU....I don't know what they're playing with on their computers but if you're just working with the internet, school or work..then you won't need no more then 1.6 Ghz with a Gig of RAM.

BTW...if you do get Vista...first thing you wanna do is go to the Control Panel so you won't have all those pop-up about anti virus, Premissions to Programs & Windows Defender popping up all the time.......If you customize first...it'll be alot easier & smoother.

Well, Vista was horrible because it had many crashes and so on, but SP1 fixes most of the problems.
You could try it, and if you don't like it switch back to xp.
It has some new features, some new stuff, but you can't compare it with xp: when it came out people was saying the same things that they say now about vista, but Microsoft launched SP1 than followed by two more which fixed some problems. It has tons of new stuff compared to Windows 2000 (win xp) and it did worth the upgrade.
Well, if you are not sure about it, you could wait because soon will be released windows 7 which is pretty promising...

actually, its not as easy as just switching back to XP. had my fair share of frustration doing that (this is because vista failed on me before i could do a partition). vista do not allow you to downgrade to xp. you have to reformat you drive to do that.

I really want to know what you guys are doing that 'makes vista not work'.

I mean, how handicapped are people? Vista isnt a great o/s but it works, it doesn't just randomly crash, and nobody ever gives a real reason----uhh it just doesnt work.

I've used Vista for nearly 2 years now (beta included) and its just not as bas as alot of you guys claim.

Why don't alot of you just stop jumping on the anti-vista bandwagon just to sound cool..

actually, i did mention about the problems that i faced in vista in other posts. didnt write it in this thread because i didnt want to repeat it too many times. but since u asked for the problem, here it is: i had an error msg that says "explorer.exe has encounter an error and needs to close". i click okay, explorer.exe restarts and msg pops up again. wont let me do anything. this plus other minor bugs such as sound lag, hdd compatibility issues...etc. and btw, i was running SP1

i never said that 1 or 2 gigs would cause a problem.. i had 2 gigs in mine and it worked well but it needed more memory, the meter was still over 50% at idle, i had nothing on it and uninstalled all the programs i didnt need
its just my opinion if your going to go buy a vista computer... the more memory the better for that os

The more memory you have, the more memory Vista will use. When I had only 512MBs of RAM, it used around 300-350MBs of RAM; when I upgraded to 1.5GBs, it started using around 700-800. My mum's laptop (it's got 1GB RAM) uses around 500-600 or RAM after startup.
