Want Advice and Approval for this build

Hey all. This is my first time to the forums, so hello!

I've looked into some options in purchasing a desktop and after a couple searches on these forums i decided that the best way to get a sweet gaming desktop cheap is to build one. I've put in new video cards into old desktops before, but that is about the extent of my computer building knowledge.

I used Doghouse systems TL 5850c as a model for parts.

Here is the build:

ASUS P6T WS PRO LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Core i7 / Xeon Intel Motherboard - Retail: $290.00

Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor Model BX80601920 - Retail: $290.00

Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model KHX1600C8D3K2/4GX – Retail: $120.00

Western Digital Caviar Blue WD5000AAKS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive: $56.00

XFX HD-585A-ZNFC Radeon HD 5850 (Cypress Pro) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFire Supported Video Card w/ATI Eyefinity – Retail x2: $600.00

Thermaltake ArmorPlus(Armor+) VH6000BWS Black Aluminum / Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case - Retail : $190.00

LITE-ON Black 24X DVD+R 24X DVD-R SATA Black 24X DVD Writer LightScribe Support – Retail: $32.00

CORSAIR CMPSU-750TX 750W ATX12V / EPS12V SLI Ready CrossFire Ready 80 PLUS Certified Active PFC Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Retail : With Mail in Rebate : $100.00

Total Cost: $1,678.00

These are all current prices and item titles on newegg.com.

I have a few questions:

1. I checked that the enclosure box is compatible with the motherboard, but since i don't know anything about building computers, i'm not sure if this assembly will function as it should. Will this computer work with the parts that i've picked?

2. I noticed there is a build it yourself sticky which i'll use to build it. Once i've "lego'd" everything together, do i just pop in a version of windows, install it then viola, my computer works?

3. Doing this build for a first time builder wouldn't be too difficult would it? And i have all the parts listed that are necessary, right?

4. Would you recommend windows 7?

Thanks for reading my probably long post, and look forward to hearing what some of you experts have to say.

It's not difficult, don't worry.

Most people use triple channel RAM in core i7 builds, but it isn't necessary. The only difference is that there's another stick...so it'd be 6GB instead of 4. However, x58 boards are picky about what RAM they can use. Can you post a link to what you're getting?

I'd swap the hard drive for a Samsung Spinpoint F3. Similar price, but much faster:
http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10011016

Everything else looks good. (Yes, your system will fit in that case.)

That should work. Just make sure that if you ever add a third stick to use tri-channel, you buy the exact same type.

They're both very good cases. The Thermaltake is a bit better, but it's also more expensive. It's also flipping huge though, if that's a concern.

Couple last minute questions before i purchase:

1. I get all the stuff mailed to me and have it all. I install like the install thread shows (which everyone says is fairly easy). I need to purchase a windows OS and install. After all that i'm done, and can run like any regular Desktop?

2. If anyone sees any issues with this set up let me know pls!

3. How long does it take to build a system similar to this? I have all the parts listed that are necessary, right?

4. Would you recommend windows 7?

Thanks all for reading, I'm quite new to this computer building thing.. :)

1- What exactly do you mean? Are you asking if it'll work the same as a store-bought system? If so, yes it will, though you won't have all the crapware to deal with and your BIOS will be unlocked.

2- It all looks good to me. Newegg does have a pretty good monitor deal right now with this thing:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236082

Same resolution as the one you picked, but with less than half the response time, and slightly larger screen. Not a big deal either way, but I thought I'd let you know it's there.

3- It can take anywhere from 15 minutes to two hours to build, depending on how fast you move and if you get everything plugged in right the first time.

4- Definitely get Windows 7.

Nice choice on the Hard Drive, btw

I upgraded to two of these because a guy on another forum mentioned that i should go with Sapphire or ASUS vid cards.

SAPPHIRE TOXIC 100282TXSR Radeon HD 5850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card - Retail.

and these:

OCZ 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model OCZ3X1600R2LV6GK - Retail.

and the monitor you suggested.

The motherboard should be compatible no?

There's nothing wrong with XFX. They make good cards, and their warranty is literally the best in the business.

The RAM looks good. Decent timings, XMP compatible.

The mobo will be compatible with all of it. :good:

Good to go sir. Rule of thumb, NEVER go cheap on the power supply. Good thing you switched so your system should be good to go. Make sure you take pics once you get everything.

So i've been trolling across a bunch of different forums and i think i have the best bang for buck higher end gaming computer assembled.

Let me know what you think:

Thanks for reading following this drawn out thread ;)

dual vs. triple

The set up looks good. But there is one thing that I want to address about the ram. I am not an i7 expert by any means but I think that you might be better off running with 6gb in a triple channel. I looked a bit and found this test that explains it better than I can.

http://www.ninjalane.com/articles/general_information/dualvtriple

If you decide to go with a triple channel, here is a triple channel setup that has the same ram that you have in your latest assembly:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148247

You cannot put the i5-750 on a PT6 mobo, it is for an i7-920. You bottom combo purchase wont work.

I would not spend so much on a case when the CM 690 is $100 less, unless you like the looks of your case.

Corsair HX1000 PSU will do anything you need it to do.

You have 2CH memory with a 1366 mobo and 1156 CPU. What system do you want to build?
