Dont know how many of you know this already but, included in the upcoming Windows Vista there will be a file "tcpa.dll" this does not let anything not signed by microsoft run, and seeing as freeware programmers cant afford to sign theyre software you can either pay $50 to run your "freeware" or go out and buy software. so soon well all have to say good bye to our beloved Firefox, zone alarms and openoffice :'(
 
I bet someone will find a hole and exploit it in due time

Makes you think about how desperately Microsoft doesn't want programs like Firefox running on their machines.
 
Microsoft hate mozilla, have you seen Internet Explorer 7? its just firefox with IE whacked on top. i think some cracking guys will be able to make a hack that edits the registry so it thinks that its been validated
 
Yea some of the crap Microsoft pulls makes me not even have there OS installed. I am probly going to get vista but just for Halo 2, and keep xp on a different partition. THis crap really pisses me off because i dont want to spend all my money on software i could get for free *tear*
 
Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. They're just bankrupt of fresh ideas, so they have to appropriate others'. So many people use IE anyway, they'll think that M$ came up with something great. Those of us who actually know stuff about computers know otherwise.

i don't think MS would alienate the people who use freeware software, because its a big chunk of the users, in the long run it will hurt them.
 
That's what's called vista's DRM protection. Also, it will block any drivers not signed by Microsoft, not let anything called MP3 players, P2P programs. To finalize, if you do not have a HDCP monitor, the BEST resolution will be 640x480. If you higher it, it will say: You do not have a HDCP compliant monitor.

That step will be called: Linuxify yourself :)
 
:eek: Each time i read more news about M$ it makes me more and more likely to switch to linux, with all these thinfs about driver signing, in my pc hardly any drivers are digitally signed or whatever it is, but it doesn't make it freeware.

M$ are driving me insane with all this crap they are continually throwing at us. In the end they are one of the worst companies for encouraging software piracy, making you pay for everything, wanting to know your evey move, :mad::mad:

microsoft are trying to "rule the world", f*ck bill gates, and i doubt that it will be that server, there may be a few freeware applications out of buisness but i bet you will still be able to use most of them :D.

anyway the freeware companies will probably patch their products with a way round microsfts stupid freeware blocking....

Haha. Why would he use redhat? That's dated, use fedora core. And none of those distros require much experience. Compare Mepis or Fedora Core to Slackware or Gentoo and you will understand what I mean.

I'm too lazy to google at the moment, but if this anti-freeware shit is real, I wish microsoft the best of wishes. They'll need it, since a HUGE amount of users will be making a switch to an alternate OS. This is proof microsoft cares more about money than it's users.

This + Apple's move to intel + popularity of ipod fad == many more mac users in the future ;) .

Im no expert on law...but isnt there a sort of monopoly law against this? :confused:

I'm sure Microsoft will get out of any lawsuit claiming without this freeware blocking, the OS will be "at risk" security wise...
 
Can someone tell me the difference between freeware and a driver? As far as I know a driver is a piece of software intervening between the OS and a piece of hardware, like a modem, or soundcard, or video display. I was also under the impression that freeware was an application running under the auspices of the OS. How is the installation of freeware an issue here? I fail to see what the problem is. Unless someone wants to run a modem driver, or soundcard driver, or video driver, that's unsigned, I don't see how this will affect me loading and running a piece of freeware such as GIMP or Shareaza.

Most driver's would not be affected by Microsoft doing this...as most hardware manufacturers can pay to get there name on Microsofts signed list...if this is true the nature of open source and it being free, i see there being a problem.

True, most drivers but i use omega drivers and there not sigend with microsoft.

*Does this make any one want to switch to a mac?*
