Well played Sony, losing more customers.

I agree, it doesn't make sense to release it after christmas. This may just be me but I wouldn't touch a PS3 for at least a year after release, probably 2-3 years. That way all the hardware problems should be sorted out. I only got a PS2 2 years ago. If I were going to buy a 'next gen' console at release it would be the Wii. The Legend of Zelda all the way!

I totally agree with the statements about the PS3 and the Wii. The Wii will be a nice system, especially with the cheaper price. Plus, Microsoft has made an even worse move in my opinion by not releasing any more games for the XBox, only for the 360. However, Sony will continue to release PS2 games for the forseeable future; this leaves the PS3 as the high-end hardcore console, and the PS2 the casual gamer's option.

No offense to your friend, but he's kinda stupid for not getting the premium version of the 360...
none taken, i think so too.
i guess ill have to decide whether i want PS3 by playing the display model in store...
Graphics does not mean best game ever.
im an enthusiast. i like high end graphics. for me, it does mean best game ever.
I was under the impression that MS is backing HD-DVD, but I'd love to see a source that says otherwise.
i cant cite any sources, except the pamphlet...
"Choice / Flexibility - Microsoft wants the gaming market know that they are all about what is best for gamers, so they are not taking a side in the "HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray" format war. While they do have plans for an HD-DVD drive attachment, they specifically chose to not embed one of the formats into their hardware, thus making the customer become "stuck with it" - an obvious call out to Sony and their PS3 that comes stock with a Blu-Ray player."
im not sure if its true... but thats what the pamphlet that i recieved at work said.
the Wii is way out of everything elses league, its a childs play thing, a family toy, its not a feesible future console, it will be short lived just like every other nintendo creation.
nintendo must be after the family market... probably bigger than any other market there is. of course, personally i think that it doesnt matter because who plays video games in families other than teenagers - teenagers who want the coolest stuff...
your right though, i think its a childs toy... just like the gamecube... cheesy graphics, quick cheesy gameplay, easy to learn and probably more attractive to a mother who wants to buy a gaming system so her family can spend time together... they named it "Wii" pronounced "We" meaning "us" or implying that people ought to play it together... its a cheap family gaming system meant for a budget fun-time...
"The name "Wii" itself is meant to evoke feelings of "us" and "playing together," which really sums up nintendo's goal of having something for every gamer out there and even growing the entire gaming base by attracting non-gamers in for the first time as well as bringing "lapsed gamers" back into the fold."
again out of the pamphlet.

wow i really like this thread. haha
lol i forgot to mention my friends xbox 360 - the one with the non-premium xbox - LAGS... seriously it might be because it doesnt have a hard drive... but dude its frikkin crazy, the thing seems like its got hard drive lag i figure its because it needs to read the disc, but why not show a loading screen then??

Its not like the Wii is going to have stick figures dancing around with 8 bit sprites running @ 5 fps.

A lot of the younger people may not really realize this, but blu ray is going no where. It is way too costly and doesn't even make sense at this time for its release. I can list a TON of technologies that have come out like this and failed.

The fact that Sony wants to replace everything in your entertainment system in one box is kind of an asinine idea. If one thing breaks on the playstation then you must go out and buy a whole new PS3 to replace your, DVD player, digital audio receiver, digital media player, etc.

I am not saying the PS3 is a bad idea, I am saying the market is no where near ready for it, and with its hefty price tag and expensive games on their godly expensive and unecessary media (blu ray) it has a good chance of failing.

Not to mention IBM has a history of making failed processors. They weren't bad products, they were just marketed wrong.

I will remain completely skeptical until I see it succeed for a few years.

Meanwhile, the wii offers unique gameplay, still good looking graphics, and its affordable. The developer kit is just over $1,000 which means all kinds of developers will have cheap easy access to make titles. There is no way this system will be limitied, to what you are calling "family games"

How much does a company have to pay for a PS3 dev kit? Then expect to sell games at $75.00 each?

i never said anything about it being limited to family games... all i said was that its going to appeal more to the "family" market whereas the PS3 is built to appeal more to the hardcore gamer who likes high graphics and doesnt mind spending so much money on it.

personally... i want a PS3... i may not get it for the first few months but i'll bet anything ive got one within the first year that its out.
games dont even need the amount of processing power that its got, which is what makes the thing so appealing to me - its going to support the best graphics for quite some time now... i still prefer pc games just because there are more titles, more types of titles, and i can always upgrade if need be... but the PS3 will be the fastest gaming system out...

in fact there isn't a single PS3 gaming system thats been produced that isn't already reserved, that's how successful its going to be...

you never knew that SONY was delaying the release in the PAL area due to Blu-Ray problems. I knew about this a month ago

To Top it off, I believe developers were just getting their kits over this summer as well. Meaning the first releases of the games are going to be buggy as hell.

They almost always are. Luckily the PS3 has backwards compatability so if they just use their PS2 kits and put a truckload of content on the disc not many will complain. Most initial releases for 'next gen' consoles aren't very next gen anyway.

I agree, would be no different then the norm for a newly released console.

one big problem though

wii and gamecube are both based off PPC hardware, with ATI chips. So its pretty much the same platform. So, their dev kits are pretty much universal.

PS3 went from x86 to cell processing, they need new dev kits, and from what I have read (I could be wrong) they just shipped out this summer like in june/july.
Add the high cost of a PS3 dev kit, and you may see developers not continue on to PS3 until they are sure there is a market for it. However, there is still a market for PS2.

I digress though, it is hard to tell what will fail and what will succeed in the consumer market. Many technologies have showed up and promised to be in for the long run only to be phased out with in a year or two.

Sony's getting dumber by the minute. First they make it so you can't buy games second hand, (EB Games, pawn shops, etc.) Now they're releasing after Christmas, they are slowly committing suicide.... This is getting increasingly funny.

yea, you're right... and even if they do move to PS3 they'll overprice for the games just because the kit cost so much.
i still think there's a market for it though. just not a very big one.
