What could be wrong?

So I just got my setup, which is listed in my sig.

I installed everything to the best of my abilities. Now when I load up, it just stays there and say's WARNING CPU FAN IS FAIL OR RUNNING SLOW!

and it gives me the option of going into set up..

do you know what I coulda done wrong during the set up? thanks

heatsink/thermal paste applied wrong, or mabye you pluged the fan into the wrong spot...there sould be a slot on your mobo, check mobo's manual, it sould say something like CPUFAN1...

Be sure you plugged the fan into the correct header on the motherboard. It should be labled somehow, or check the manual.

Also, some fans just don't spin very fast... Many new motherboards have the ability to control how fast fans go, and I know my previous build would sometimes go too slow and set off an alarm. Try looking into the bios and maybe changing some settings with the fan control.

OK thanks. But now I have another problem....

I can't run an OS through the disk drive... it won't let me. Do you know what I could have done wrong? Did I install the it wrong? thanks guys

what exactly do you mean by "cant run an os through the disk drive". by disk drive do you mean hdd, or cd-dvd drive or what. you should just be able to put the disk in and turn on the computer and have it boot from the cd. if it doesnt auto boot from that then go into the bios and change the boot order. To get into bios use the delete key, or escape, or one of the f keys, what ever your particular setup prompts you to when you boot up

If the hard drive is set to master and is a stand alone you simply select the cd drive as the boot device in the F8 boot menu or set the cd rom as the boot device in the bios setup. Once you have booted with the installation disk for XP the installer will detect the drive and ask if you wish to create a new partition on it. The installer will show the total drive space available.

For a single primary simply answer yes for the installer to partition and format the drive. Once all setup files are copied onto it the system will restart. If you are planning a storage partition you would reduce the first number in size to approximate for the primary. On an 80gb drive you would probably see 74.47802gb or some figure close to that. For splitting the drive more evenly you would want 35gb for the primary and enter 36.12gb or some figure like this to allow room for Windows and softwares installed.

thanks guys problem solved. I just ran into one more problem.

When i first inserted the windows xp cd, it loaded up after i hit F1 (continue). Well, I figured since I got everything going right, I'll shut off the computer, put everything in place, and then continue the XP installation.

But now when I hit F1, it just doesn't load from my CD rom. It just blinks an under score all the time... like this _

what could be wrong now? thanks

ok well i fixed that problem now...

now the problem i have is i don't have windows xp service pack 2... how do i get that?

You have to download the full 266mb service pack and save it to a folder then burn it to cd-r in case you have to reinstall Windows at some point. Well that's the best way to go. The microsoft update link will bring you right to that and you will see that downloaded for the "one time only" installation there along with other updates(a long list if you haven't been there in some time). SP2 can be downloaded and saved to a temp folder from http://www.softwarepatch.com/network-security/winxpsp2-security.html

If the download doesn't start immediately the proceeding page is at http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/xpsp2.html

now i hit f1 and load the cdrom but now it says "hit any key to boot cd... error loading OS"

When you select the cd drive in the F8 menu and press enter the next screen will be the same as if you had set the cd drive as the first boot device while in the bios. You still have to simply press "any key" when you see the dots growing in number after the "press any key to boot from cd" message.

ok it works now. jesus.

Did you press a key.. any key?

no i didn't it just started working for some reason.

I've got some questions for you. My motherboard has a OC tool that comes with it as well as a device that monitors all the important info. Well i am seeing the cpu mhz keeping stable at 2000 mhz... but sometimes i see it just all the way down to 900 mhz. It only happened twice.

And on my probing tool, it shows that my chassis fan1, 2, 3, 4, and power fan is at 0 rpms. What is going on here? thanks

ok... during the time im writing this... it just jumped to 3100 mhz.... which can't be good. Is there something wrong? why is my system so unstable? Ok.. there it just decreased to 900 mhz again... and now 3110...

Either the monitoring program you are using is worthless or your bios is flaking out and giving crazy readings. Looking at your sig one question that seems to fit here would be asking if you ever updated the bios since first installing the board? One thing often advise for boards running dual core cpus is the latest revision that included fixes as well as support needed for the dual core line.

once i get my internet running ill get the updated support.

its just freaking me out though...

stable at 2.3ghz... then all the sudden BAM 1.3 then BAM! 3.4......
funny thing is my temp is reading the same.

The bios update would be the first thing to look into there. Follow the instructions for backing up the current first however. If the board itself doesn't have a defect the update would correct this or should.
