What is the meaning of a MemTest?

Hi folks,

What is the meaning of a MemTest?:)

Here are the results: [Memtest 4.0]

I selected option 2, Memtest 3.5, and the program ran:P

"Unexpected Interrupt - Halting CPU0":(
Errors: 0
Ecc Err: 0
Pass: 0
Pass 0%
Test 57%
Time = 01 sec

::100% of time same results #Boots: 4:mad:

Basically your RAM is defective or incompatible if the test just halted. The test will run for eternity if your RAM is all compatible and not defective.

JHM,
Good to meet you.

Sounds like your RAM is okay.
General Test Time: 2 hours

Spirit,
Thanks for the input.

So what should I do, throw the RAM away: it is that useless?

NOTE
If I have been running this same RAM for 1 year and haven't had these problems, then it can't mean that the RAM is incompatible right?

Therefore, it is defective?

So a failed RAM test means that it is defective or incompatible?

FYI you aren't supposed to hit any buttons unless you know what you're doing. You're supposed to boot to the image and just let it run on its own.

Yeah it's likely defective and yes if the tests fails something is clearly up.

Thanx for the tip.

I am currently running the "Isolate One RAM Stick Diagnostic Test".

So far, the MemTest 3.5 program has been running for hours. The numbers are changing on the screen, and there has been no errors as of yet. I am going to wait until the test completes.

A "complete test" will be completed once I have successfully ran it overnight without any errors.

It is still running.

At this point, I HOPE there "is" an error in one of my RAM sticks, because if there are no errors in two of these tests, of the "Isolate One RAM Stick Diagnostic Test", then that means there is an issue with the mobo, which is NEVER good!

Well before you give up on your mobo, another trick worth trying, is take the RAM sticks out, then blow out the slots with compressed air, to clean any dust out of them, then reinsert the RAM and try the tests again.

You really think that would make a difference, or could skew the results? Just to let you know, I am running a laptop.

Could definitely make a difference. Worth doing! Also worth testing each stick individually too, the sticks may be fine, but you may just have a bad combination. Try reseating the sticks too.

Here is my current situation. Here's what I did: [I have 2 RAM sticks]
> I ran MemTest 3.5
> Both RAM sticks at same time: Fail, 1 sec
> Isolate Single RAM Stick Diagnostic Test, #1 RAM Stick
Run Time: 13 hours, #Passes: 51
No errors
> Isolate Single RAM Stick Diagnostic Test, #2 RAM Stick
Run Time: 12 hours
No errors

Does this mean that both of my RAM sticks are good?

NOTE
My computer hasn't been able to run/install any OS for 2 months. It has been crashed because of this no RAM issue.

I've seen something similar where individually the RAM sticks wouldn't fail, but together they would. That does indicate faulty RAM, so you're best off replacing those two sticks.

I heard that if you put both RAM sticks in at the same time and they fail -- and then you perform the Isolate Single RAM Stick Diagnostic Test to both RAM sticks and they pass, that it indicates that there is a problem with your mobo. Does this mean my mobo has a problem and I should throw away the computer but keep the RAM?

There could be a problem with my motherboard?

No you likely just have a bad combination of RAM, two or more of the sticks don't work with each other. It happens.

And you said you were going to throw them away. Please try to recycle them. Any computer store or electronics store will be able to do this for you.

Spirit,
How you doing bro?

I have been running these SAME RAM sticks for 1 year without a problem. It wan't until my system crashed that I ran a MemTest and just found the problem.

However, that IS an interesting idea about the different RAM from two companies. I have not heard of this kind of compatibility issue, though I HAVE heard of lower performance values...

Yes, use different slots, now that is great idea, I'll try that. Well, now it looks like I have a lot more tests ahead of me, and at 12 hours each, this may take some time.
