What temp should my CPU be? current temp is scary...

Hello. I have a concern with my CPU temp...

I got my new comp running for the first time last night!
It has:

ASUS P5B Deluxe Mobo /wifi
e6400 Intel Core 2 Duo

So here's the deal. I am using the stock heatsink/fan that came with the chip... I didn't apply my own thermal compund because it comes with its own pre-applied... When attempting to attach the heatsink/fan, I accidently rubbed my thumb very lightly across the pre-applied compound... I cleaned off the smudges I left (with rubbing alcohol) around the compound, but figured everything would be fine... so i installed anyway, and booted up...

No boot-up probs, everything great.

However.... I went into BIOS and had the mobo scan the temperature of the CPU, and the results just didn't seem right....

(averaging, cause it kept swaying)

It said 80º C, and something like 170º F.... (maybe higher in F, but i forget...)

After I seen the high temp(high in my opinion), I quickly turned off the comp, took rubbing alcohol to remove the existing thermal compound, and replaced it with my own (artic silver 5). I also added a little more compound than what the Intel fan had applied....

Anywho... I haven't had a chance to try out the new stuff...

Does 80 C seem correct? I mean its 70 F in my home... and I thought I heard ideal temps for CPUs are 30-60 C....

Any ideas/suggestions would be great!

When first applying AS5 you only let the system run for about 3-4hrs. until the system gets warmed up. The cpu temps will be high during those first few hours. You then shut the system down for several hours to allow the new application of AS5 to start the bonding process. It usually takes up to two weeks for the new coat to fully adhere while the temps drop down during the first few days.
 
You SHOULD be worried.

After applying a new thermal paste, initial temperature will be 5-ish above what it will soon run at. So, after a few days, your temperature will stabilise at anything from room temperature to 35C (idle).

When you smudged the pre-applied paste, did you smudge through the middle?

somewhat, yes, but it was SUCH a small smudge...

hopefully when i get to test the new paste tonight the temps will be lower...

Yea thats way to high, but it could be a bad board sensor or the bios is just reading it wrong, if the os is installed put a temperature program on it and see if it backs the bios up!

sandra lite is a good program to use to see your cpu temp and so forth everything you would like to know about your computer ram speed fan speeds that they are running at try this it may help you get a better reading.

usually when i turn my intel 3.06 ghz on it runs at 60 65 celius and drops down to about 55 or 50 fully booted up and only usually touches 65 when house is room temperature and im running games thats as high as it goes but when house is cold i get it to about 55 celicius under full load only time mine overheats is when its hot as hell in my room so thats when i usually shut my pc off and give it a good rest

According to Arctic Silver 5's website, you are supposed to put a small "half rice grain size" drop of AS5 in the center of the CPU Die, and then put the cooler straight down, and then when it the CPU and the Heatsink are touching, then you are supposed to rotate it a few degrees in each direction, then secure it..
 
If it said 80C with the stock intel stuff theres something wrong. It doesn't look like much but it works fairly well.

Some of these have been mentioned before but either the sensor isn't working, the fan isn't spinning or the temperature is being read wrong.
 
w00t. It must have been the smudge!

I cleared off the smudge & the pre-applied thermal compound.

I applied a new layer of AS5.

and now its 40-45 C!

In other words the stock thermal pad didn't adhere when you smeared the sticky surface there. Now that you have a layer of AS5 it's seeing normal temps since the compound is now bonding correctly. With stock cooling that's about the normal temp range seen when idle.
 
That will do the trick if you apply a raisin sized amount in the center and give it a little stir to get any separation mixed.
 
Ive never any problems with it. SpeedFan goes right on without even needing a system restart. But lately when suggested to one person complaints were heard how it didn't work out there? The one thing that it does lack is seen when looking at the cpu and board temps in the general tab. You will see temps #1 + #2 plus... ??? after ??? but no indication as which one seen is what hardware. Temp #1 is for the cpu with temp #2 being the board temp. For the most part there you have to figure that out by yourself however.
 
80 degrees is way to high. a recent processor with the stock heatsink/fan should run from 40 degrees to 70 under massive load.

It all depemds on whether it's degrees in celcius or farenheit. 80C=176F Intel P4s were known to run upto 185F with stock cooling. 185F=85C AMD models always 42C idle to the mid 50Cs when loaded. 70C is hot for the newer line of both AMD and Intel cpus.
