Where the ethernet driver?

I've had several PC's in the past that came with a Ethernet port that did not work and ended up adding a network pci card or wireless card which worked great. In other words I gave up.
My wife's cousin left for two europe for two years and gave me his old PC. It's a 2.8 gig Dell with Windows XP pro and it too has a wireless card and the built in network port. I removed the Linksys card to use in another PC.
I want to know why the built in ethernet or network port is dead and the PC says there is no network adapter built-in, but it's there, just like other PC's I've had.

Who knows how to activate the factory network port.? Driver?

Go to the Dell support site. Enter the relevant information, such as the model name and number, and you should be able to find the network adapter driver. If you want to post the model name and number here, we can try and help you out.

If it had an additional NIC installed then it is possible that the on board NIC is turned off in the BIOS. Worth checking there if you have removed the additional card.

That's another possibility. Good call.

I did it again

I tried to download the Dell utilties on my other computer, but it would not transfer the network utility to cd, so I could put the cd in the 2.8 Dell, so I added a wireless adapter to the Dell 2.8 I was given and it works fine.

I'm still agravated since I could not make the builtin network port work.

I went to Dell with this Dell 2.8 I'm on now and tried to download the same files but they too didn't ID the built-in network port.

Now since I have internet using the wireless network card on this newer 2.8 Dell, how can I make the built-in network port work?

It a Dell Optiplex GX260 2.8g with 1g memory, with a useless network hole.

Any Ideas?

If its not in BIOS try to see if there is a jumper on the board to enable/dianble it. I doubt but its worth a shot. If there network chip has died I would be suspicious that the mobo may be dying.

Please tell me how

I'm good with software and with hardware, but not the bios. I can change parts, but not what I cannot see.
