AVG doesn't spike your CPU usage, so you should have no problem leaving it active.
IIRC, Nod32 is not any less intensive on resources than AVG, if it is, it's not noticable.
Norton actually used to be good, even Norton 2003 was Ok, and Symantec has great removal tools, just that Norton has gotten too bloated and big and full of junk for my taste in a security program.
