Which internal hard disk is quality?

Really Blues are good eh? I bought 10 of them for the new machine I am building. The first 5, (The machine will be using 5), were : 1) Minor sector damage scattered all over the drive but otherwise good. 2) Not even recognized by the bios 3) MAJOR sector damage on the front part of the drive 4) Very low read speed as opposed to # 1 and MAJOR sector damage at the rear of the drive 5) Again very low read speed and minor sector damage all over the drive.

So I sent them back for a refund and bought 5 more. Three of them tested damaged with TESTHDD and the other two I haven't tested yet, Havent even opened the sealed packages they came in.

I think you depend too much on that testhdd program as its not even a popular program. I think if you would have actually used a decent program, you would find out that some of those drives were not bad.

+1

Not sure if it was that guy or not that was discussing it a while ago, but it's an ancient program that I'm sure has problems of its own. Always best to just use the manufacturer utility.

say what you want about that program, I will never use it for a couple of reasons. 1. Russian origin. 2. It is a third party programmer.

You will never find a better program than the manufacturers diagnostic to test a hard drive. They are designed to word with your specific hard drive. Using anything else is just asking for trouble.

If you have had that many problems with your hard drives, have you checked your power supply? There are probably other hardware problems that could cause it as well, but the P/S always seems like a good starting point. Voltage spikes can be rather hard on computers as well, though I'm not sure if the HDD is the first component to take the hit. Others may be able to comment on that.

It just seems odd that you would have that many problems with different hard drives to not question what else might be causing it. I've had hard drive failures myself, but this sounds like it might be more than that.

David, If you are referring to me, my machines have hotswap trays in them. I tested the drives for my new machine in the hotswap bays on my currant machines. I have never bought Caviar Blues before, and nor have I ever had problems like those I experienced testing brand new Caviar Blues when testing my other drives.Further I have also found a post at another site saying Caviar Blues are no good.

No offence to anyone, but I agree.A friend of mine had 1 TB caviar blue and 1 TB caviar green and they both died withing 10 days. That sucks lol.

....Been building computers for years and really have had more Western Digitals die then Seagate...

Same here.

...Western Digital just last fot only 2 months...

:D
Johnb35 do you still think WD is better than Seagate :P ?

I am not saying WD is bad. Those old 20 and 40 GB PATA WD drives are great, but these new ones are a lot worse. No offence of course ;)

Cheers everyone!

When it comes to HDD reliability, I've always considered the following rank order in my head:

1. Samsung
2. Western Digital
3. Seagate
4. Most of the rest
5. Hitachi Deathstar

This is simply my own opinion. Others have drastically different opinions, based on their own experiences. I count WD and Seagate as very similar, but Seagate seems to be more hit or miss, depending on the specific model of drive in question. Samsung (HDDs) was also recently bought by Seagate, so it should be interesting to see what happens with them down the road. I know on Newegg that Samsung drives already have the name "Seagate" in the name. I personally hope none of the manufacturing side of Samsung drives changes, but I have no idea if it already has or will.

It would be cool to have a HDD that cannot spoil lol.
Because HDDs are so damn sensitive. They can die at ANY TIME.Hell my HDD can die right now as I am writing this.
Oh crap I better click the "Submit Reply" button right now before it dies!!!:D:D:D

Chee...(nah the hell with that "Cheers!" word.It takes too much time to write it.If my HDD is gonna die right now I better not lose time on writing "Cheers!".

-_-' Omg.I am soooo stupid.I just lost MORE time writing the sentence above than writing a simple "Cheers!" word. -_-'
I better click the "Submit Reply" button right now before my HDD dies!!! :D:D:D

My seagate is running at 28c right now. JHM, why havent you ran seagate tools on the drive and show the results?
