Which PSU

These are my parts:

MSI 915P Neo2
Kinston 1 gig (not sure of timings)
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 775 (Processor 630)
Xfx 6600GT pci-e 128mb
maxtor sata 80gigs

I want to get a thermaltake Soprano, are the psus which come with it; either 400 or 430, are they good enough. Otherwise I would like to find a shop which sells the soprano w/o a psu, andsomeone to recommend a suitable psu. By the way, I live in Melbourne,AUstralia.

Generally speaking, PSU's that come with cases are crap, unless your using them for a very low budget and less demanding computer.

Ok, the problem is I want the soprano, but they generally all come with a psu. SO would it be better to get another case with a suitable psu? Anyway, can you please recommend one?

Thanks for replying so quickly but I live in Melbourne, Australia so the range here isn't as great as in USA. I havent found a Soprano which is sold w/o a PSU.

Hmmm. I see what you mean, I haven't been able to find one either, although I did see one on ebay a few weeks ago. Indeed, it's quite difficult to find many good cases without power supplies here in Melbourne (at least those that aren't rediculously expensive), to the extent where the last time I upgraded I just bought a case with a power supply, and ditched the PSU.

If it's the style you're looking for, the Thermaltake Mambo case (Thermaltake's budget case) looks similar. If you add a 120mm intake fan and some thumbscrews, all you're really missing is the dust filter (which, unfortunately, I find fairly important:mad: ). Also the toolless design is a little different, but is supposed to be quite good as well. It looks almost the same, but that's probably not quite what you're looking for.

I'll admit to not being an expert on cases, but I've generally looked for something with sufficient cooling, rounded edges, toolless entry and dust filters. To me, anything else is just personal preference.

What's your budget (in AUD)?

Well, I sent an email to www.pccasegear.com asking whether I could buy the Soprano at a lower price and then buy the Antec 480W TruePower. Hopefully they let me. But I'll only get a reply on the 16th of Jan, when they open business again.

It's also a bit annoying how USA has Newegg:( Australia should have a newegg as well:(

thats is a very expensive psu for te size, maybe u should check out the forum PSU 101, it will give u some amazing psus for better prices than that.

Ok I'll go and look at PSU 101, but remember that the price is in AUstralian DOllars, and stuff here is more expensive anyway.

good point, i didnt realize it was australian money. nonetheless reading the 101 is a good choice because 129.00 AUD
Australia Dollars = 97.4394 USD
United States Dollars and that is still an expensive, you will find a better one under recommendations in the 101 for cheaper. so good luck

Which section from PSU 101 should I look under for my PSU?
-Value Orientated?
-High End Orientated?
-Mainstream GAmer Orientated?

Or could you please find one from there which you think would be suitable, and I'll see if I can find it in Melbourne.

Yeh, but things cost more here in Australia, and i've found it about as hard to find a decent PSU as to find a decent case without a PSU. There's just no variety:mad:. If you know what you're looking for, you can get some good deals from ebay. The NeoPower 480 i'm using only cost me $80AUD from ebay.

Thanks for replying, I'm only 15 but I've set up an account on Ebay for my dad. I'll go check the prices on some PSU's there.

ceewi1, do you know any good stores which sell over the net in Melborune, or store locations?

you should look under high end oriented. the psus there usually have some sort of PFC and nice wattage and amp ratings. try for one for about 75 US dollars. since thats what price he shows in that thread.

To find the best prices on computer equipment in Australia, go to www.staticice.com.au. It searches a few hundred stores across Australia. Great for finding the cheapest price, and then asking a local retailer to match.

As for prices, I find www.msy.com.au to be one of the cheapest stores in Melbourne, although I don't think they do business online. Whereabouts in Melbourne are you?

I don't often give advice on cases, as I find it to be mostly a matter of personal choice. These are the features I look for in a case:

  • Adequate cooling - dust filters, cooling fans (number & size)
  • Toolless entry (if you're going to be opening up your case a lot)
  • Rounded edges (again, useful if you intend to open your case a lot)
  • Side Window (aesthetic consideration) & Side Fan (optional, depends on what other fans the case has)
  • Front USB, sound & Firewire (To me, front USB & Sound are very important features)
