Which SSD should I buy?

Hey guys,

I havent really been on here in a long time, but anyway, down to business.

Basically, I'd like to purchase an SSD, and since prices have come down a lot and performance has increased, I thought now would be a reasonably good time, so, any suggestions?

I havent really been keeping up to date with the PC news lately haha, so yeah suggestions on SSD's please, looking for it to be used as a start up drive, im going to perform a reinstall when I receive the SSD and use it as the bootup drive. Price range around £100 pounds, resonable size, no smaller than 60GB and unless its cheap, not really any need to be bigger than 120GB.
(Looking for a dramaticly positive difference in performance over my 7200rpm hard drive please :))


Last time I was up to date with PC news, corsair force GT ssd's looked good amoungst others like the M4 and sandisks range.

Hey again spirit, wow, how good is the sandisk? for 80 quid that sounds like a good deal, Im gonna look up some other sizes to try and get an even bigger one if possible (180gb maybe)

That vertex does look like a gooden, ill look around some more.

What is so good about it? Reliable? performance?

Yeah the SanDisk is very fast and reliable it seems, but so was the M4 I had once upon a time (the SanDisk is quicker though). Upgrading firmware on the SanDisk is very easy too.

I haven't used any of OCZ's drives, so I'm basing my opinion on reviews, but the Vertex 4 is meant to be a very fast drive.

Given the choice between say the Extreme, the Samsung 830/840 and the Vertex 4, I'd just go for whichever is cheapest, that's going to the SanDisk Extreme probably.

I would recommend getting a 256GB drive now that prices are cheaper. When I bought my M4 and my Extreme the prices for 256GB drives were still high, so that's why I bought 128GB.

I looked at the prices of the vertex 4 and they seem reasonable, i might be able to afford the 256gb model, would you say its one of the fastest on the market? And if not, fast than those others you suggested?

Yes the Vertex 4 is one of the fastest on the market.

If you want some stats, here are the read/write speeds you can expect from a SanDisk Extreme (my own tests).

Boot time with Windows 7 is less than 20 seconds (about 10-15 I think) and shut down is about 5 seconds or so.

Make sure you use the SATA 6GB/s controller on your board when you use the SSD. Also remember to set the SATA mode to AHCI in the BIOS. When you come to install Windows make sure only the SSD is plugged in and any additional drives are disconnected.

I think its gonna be between the sandisk and the vertex 4, those are definatly the best correct? I just want to make sure :D

Yes i will need to re-familarize myself with my PC haha, its been that long sadly! (Cant remember which is 6GB but shouldnt be hard to find)

Thanks for the heads up, as I said, i will be reinstalling windows so yes ill need to do that :P

Ill check that website and as i said, i think its between vertex 4 and the extreme, thanks for your help, I have plenty of time to choose and wont be able to use it till christmas, but still, looks good.
 
Yes the Vertex 4 and the Extreme are two of the best in my opinion. Might also want to look at the Hyper-X drives from Kingston too. Couldn't find any on Novatech but I'm sure you could get one from Dabs or Overclockrs or somewhere like that.

I still rate the M4 though, that's a great little drive, but the Extreme and the Vertex 4 are newer.
 
Yeah I agree the M4 looks really good, getting on though as you said and computer tech outdates quiiiiickly :P

Just as a heads up, im pretty new to SSD technology especially, what am I looking for that makes it good? (Like what do all the different speeds mean, im familiar with mb/s etc but what IOPS?)
 
Try and go for the fastest read/write possible, or just look on Anandtech and see which SSDs are the fastest.
 
Great thanks, ill take a look later, going off for a bit now, and i just remembeder i watched some videos a while ago about IOPS, they are actually quite useful, it stands for input/outputs per second, im sure you already knew but meh ;)
 
He's in the UK and over here the 512GB drives are still quite a bit more expensive than the 256GB ones, and 256GB is enough space anyway.
 
Thanks for the input S.T.A.R.S. but yeah unfortunatly i dont have that kinda money laying around ;) and +1 to what spirit said.

May have to go with the 128gb one because of the price. :(
