Why won't you work!!

Hi all,

Having a bit of a problem with a new build, it's been working fine for about a week but went into it today as the CPU fan was just catching the wire making an annoying tapping noise so all I did was move it. Also I changed my two 120mm corsair fans for te two that came with the case as they're quieter and now when I turn it on it flashes on then goes off. After that I have to turn it off at the wall and wait 30secs to get it to do anything again. However I went to work for about 5 hours then got back and tried it. (It had been off the whole time at the wall) and it worked! So I turned it off immediately and now it's not coming on again. Any help?

My thinking is that maybe turning it straight off has done something to the PSU (corsair tx850) and it needs an hour or so to basically reset or something. Probably a mile off but you know.

Also I have tried unplugging the fans and trying to turn it on again. No joy.

Sometimes when you're working inside your computer you may bump something lose. Make sure all your connections are firmly in place. I know that if you don't have the CPU fan connected correctly some motherboards won't allow you to boot.

I've done that but still no joy. The CPU fan is definitely connected as it does about one spin before shutting off again :/. Will post a video of what happens to help my point aha

With it off and unplugged, push the power button a few times to discharge it. Plug it back up and see what it does.

Theres two pins that you plug the case power button into. try without the wire from the case but actually short it with a metal screwdriver. My guess was that the wire wasn't making a proper connection but i could be wrong.

Try the reset cmos first. You'll find a little battery in a socket somewhere on the MB take it out with all the power disconnected. Wait like 5-10 minutes then plug it back in.

Yes, this is simply a bios issue as said above. Reset the bios or load default bios settings.

Ensure you have the latest BIOS from the manufactuer.

Then ensure you have correct settings for Q-fan and the correct fan connected to the correct fan header. Basically ensure the CPU fan is connected to the CPU header.

Well that has put my mind at rest I was worried something had drastically failed. I will reset the CMOS when I get home. And failing that I'll try the screwdriver thing. Thanks for you help

Using a screw driver to start in the absence of the proper method actually harmful ?

Not exactly but using the power switch will do the same thing. If he gets any power running through it to kick up the fans at least for a second means his power button is working and using a screw driver would have the same result.

Bad news

The other day it cut out on me again. I've tried removing the battery again but no luck. I left it out for six hours earlier and I used a new battery just in case and the computer stayed on for a minute before turning off again. Admittedly I never got round to updating the bios which is now my priority. The only thing I think it may be is that at the top left of the motherboard there is a tiny switch. Just next to the 2 clear CMOS prongs. I have moved this switch a couple of times and have no idea which side it should be on. I have no idea what this switch is but does anyone know if it being in the wrong position could be affecting it? And does anyone know of anyway of fixing this problem.

When it did come on earlier i didn't get to the keyboard quick enough to enter the bios menu so I don't know if that is why it has gone off again. Any help much appreciated. Thanks

You look at the board with the CPU socket at the top. So the switch your talking about is at the bottom about 1/3 of the way from the bottom right. The switch is the bios main/backup switch. Looking at it with the CPU socket at the top as above, the switch is suppost to be pushed to the right.

At the top right of the board you have a CMOS_SW clear button, a RST_SW reset button, a PW_SW power button.
