Will a P4 550 auto shut off if a too high temp is reached?

Hi this is also in regard to another post where my P4 550 was idling really high, Iver tried reinstaling the heatsink 3 times, and i cant get the temperature to lwer, Ive tried to put the Arctic silver on many different ways now i think i have too much on i just put a small blob in the middle at let the heatsink spread it out, (swiftech mcx775-v). I've also stripped one of the shitty plastic screws out of four that come with the heatsink, so now i have to make it a mission to remount the heatsink, and its even worse to take it off.

I tried to spread it but if i have a really thin layer of it my computer hits 80 degrees on boot up. this blob i have right now is idling at 60 - 63, which i still belive is too high for a p4 550.

I am going to right now run prime95 in the torture test, for 8 hours or so while i sleep, maybe more. I might just need to let the bob burn in? lol I just wanted to know will the cpu shut off the computer if it reaches a temperatur it thinks is too high?

everybody says that as soon as they use arctic silver that they see an immediate improval of temps. bte i use 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the cpu and heatsink.

btw: i have an Asus P5AD2-E premium.

nice spelling in the title.

put a blob in the middle?? u r meant to spread it out thinly. it takes a while for the arctic silver to set in and reach full performance. like a week.

Do you OC it?

Oc= overclocking

how does that make any sense?? whats it?? and why cant u just say do u overclock it?

instead of your sentence which says, Do you overclocking it?

Are you asking me if I overclock my computer?

IF that is the question then the answer is, no. I currently do not overclock any elements my compter. Though it is very easy to do so.

I assume the OP didnt OC. OC - overclocking.

Sometimes it takes longer if it's a fresh heatsink. Also if you installed the heatsink and let it burn the "factory" grease into the heatsink there's no way to get it out of the microscopic crevices in the HS. If that's the case and you still want to use the Arctic silver you need to get a new HS and clean off the factory grease before you install it OR the arctic silver. There's a thread on here or sysopt somwhere that shows you how to do it.

P.S. Looks like you found a glitch in the profanity detector :D

ya but there should still be a noticeable change at the start (going from stock to as5)

lol enough arguing semantics and grammer the core component was conveyed

I never even used the stock stuff that came with it, i think it came with arctic ceramic.
So you removed the stock "gel" from the heatsink before you ever put it on the CPU and turned it on?

since part of the original question wasn't answered, no a P4 will not auto shut off when it gets too hot. It throttles instead, clocking down until it cools off enough to clock back up

I have had my P4 shut down for getting too hot, during a startup actually (don't want to get into the details though... :o)

I think the most accurate statement is that P4s will attempt to throttle however if we manage to generate more heat than throttling can deal with the mobo will kick in an save the system :)

thank-you,

i do not even use the stock heatsink, i use a swiftech mcx775-v with a thermaltake smartfan, i run it at ~70cfm and the cpu temp at idle is still around 68-70, ive put the Arctic Silver5 on 3 times, using 99% alcohol each time to remove it. ive done this so many times im tired of doing it, ive also pushed the heatsink down for about 2 minutes or so and it doesnt affect the temperatures, so i am pretty sure that it is on securely.
