Win 7 64 bit dual boot with XP

Hi

I am trying to dual boot my Windows 7 64bit with XP. I tried just inserting the install disc and clicking "Install Windows XP" from the popup window, but it is either grayed out (can't click it) or when I can, another window pops up saying something along the lines "We have determined your version of windows is newer then the one you're about to install. We won't let you."

How do I install XP?

I already have partitioned my HDD (I even have a blank second HDD) ready to have xp installed on. These two HDD are SATA, not IDE.

I told my teacher the problem and she said to try with CMD by writing "Run (Drive letter of DVD writer)/autorun.exe (Drive letter of empty partition)"
Is this how, or not. Am I missing steps? Thanks.

For one, you need to boot to the xp cd in order to install xp. Secondly, if you try installing xp without doing something with your boot loader, you will screw up your Windows 7 installation. I'm at work and can't post links to help you out, maybe someone else can. If not I will post instructions when I get home.

Actually, I tried that and it did in fact screw up my Windows 7 installation, meaning it would not boot to either OS, but I then used my Windows 7 installer disc and select the repair option.

I will look at both links and see if they help. I tried googling but I didn't find anything that would help. Thanks.

I always had to load xp first and set up everything first. Then the Windows 7. When I tried windows 7 first it would not let me load a older version of windows.

You can do it either way, its basic. Just once you have them both on, use Windows 7 disc to repair the boot, and then use EasyBCD to modify the options as you like.
