Windows 7 is not allowing my PC to sleep/hibernate!

Hi guys,

I've got a big problem here and any/all help will be very much appreciated. Whenever I put my desktop PC to sleep or hibernation, it switchs itself back on, sometimes immediately, sometimes in a minute or so. After this happened a couple of times, I got fed up and tried putting it to sleep after disconnecting all attached peripherals.

After some connecting & disconecting, I found out that it was caused by my internet. If I put the pc to sleep/hibernation after removing the ethernet cable, it doesn't wake itself. However, when I switch it back on, I have to reboot to get my internet connection back, which makes putting it to sleep pointless.

I'm running Windows 7 Release Candidate (32bit), along with Windows XP which isn't having any such problems.

So, if this is caused by my ethernet cable, is this some kind of wake-on-lan feature? If yes, how do I disable it? Would I be right in thinking it doesn't have anything to do with my router, as XP doesn't have any problems? Also, any idea as to why my internet gets disabled after waking?

As I said, all comments/suggestions are very welcome. Not being able to put my pc to sleep is really really annoying ...

Is your computer on a network?

If you have File Sharing turned on, it will prevent you computer from sleeping.

Thanks for the reply, Bodaggit23. Yeah, it is on a Home network, with a Windows Vista desktop and a Mac OS X laptop. Now that you mentioned file sharing, I remember doing something with that recently; I was trying to share files between my Mac and this PC. However, this problem started before I messed with file sharing settings.

But just to be on the safe side, I went to Network Connections in Control Panel and disabled all the sharing bits, but it still woke up in about 15 seconds!!

You can leave your files and folders shared, you just need to change a setting in your power management.

Right Click on your Desktop, Personalize, Screen Saver, Change Power Settings.

Or, just Click your Start Menu, type "Power Settings" into the Search programs and files bar.

Whichever Preferred Plan you have selected, click Change Plan Settings.

Click on Change Advanced Power Settings, scroll all the way to the bottom, expand Multimedia Settings, expand When Sharing Media.

Change to "Allow Computer to Sleep".

You might also want to try:

Start> Control Panel > Device Manager > Go to Network Adapters, double click on your card > Go to the Power Management Tab > Unselect the check box that says "Allow This Device To Wake Computer > Click OK.
See if that helps.

After reading through your suggestion, I was asking myself "How's changing the multimedia power settings going to solve this problem if its a lan/network issue?" But I did try it because you atleast had suggestions, while I had no clue as to what to do!! Unfortunately, it didn't solve the problem ...

Thanks for the reply, aviation_man, it certainly did help! I checked by putting the pc to sleep and hibernation and sat their for 10 minutes to see if it wakes. And thankfully, it didn't!! Also, now I don't have to restart to connect to internet, because uptil now, every time I wake the pc up, the network would have that yellow warning/exclamation sign on it.

Anyways, thanks guys! Your help is very much appreciated. Now I don't have to pull my hair out trying to get it to sleep!
Thanks again!
