OS X hasn't been available on DVD since 10.6.He can buy the DVD.
Can you get to internet recovery from the recovery menu? That should pull down the latest version.
What year MacBook Pro?
Turn on the computer while holding Command + R. This will start internet recovery and you can reload the OS.

You don't need a recovery partition when using internet recovery, it works fine on a formatted drive, such as when replacing the drive. I've never had an issue using internet recovery to restore the image. My only guess is that since Lion is 3 versions old, so it may be unsupported. That makes sense. the partition was probably removed that had the recovery data on it.

I don't believe you can, you need to make the USB drive into an HFS formatted drive, it won't work with NTFS or FAT32.I tried that but there where no choice to install any newer os x.
If i have a copy of os x yosemite on my pc, does anybody know how I can create a bootable dick or usb drive so I can install it on my macbook?
Thanks
You may be able to find it via a third party, but Apple doesn't provide one.I mean the image of course.
This would be the best option.Do you have an Apple store nearby, or a friend with a Mac? You could always use a secondary Mac to download the Yosemite DMG and make a bootable flashdrive.

Yes, local recovery requires a partition on the drive, but I've been talking about internet recovery. Internet recovery does not require any software or partition to be installed on the drive, holding down Command + R will launch recovery, or internet recovery if there is no recovery partition.I was talking about local recovery. If the recovery files were over written when installing Windows 7 then he wouldn't be able to to the recovery from his internal drive.
It looks like Lion was the first OS to support internet recovery. 2012 devices and beyond should be supported.

Try Command + Option + R on start up.
does anyone know how much it would cost if I bring my macbook to an apple store to have them install the mac os?
Thank you
Snow Leopard retail discs will be what you want to buy. But in all honesty I'd go to the Apple store if they won't charge you. Then when you're all set, make a Mavericks or Yosemite USB installer and keep it somewhere for future use.
You can get any size 2.5" SSD. Only thing is TRIM is not enabled by default in OSX on non-Apple SSD's, so you'll want to download an app called TRIM Enabler.
