Windows 7 upgrade & future use question

Hey guys!

I'm kind of in a bind. Apparently, I must have carelessly lost my Windows Vista OS disc for my laptop... I'm kind of nervous :(

I was looking at some prices on Newegg and Amazon for replacements, and it's apparent W7 has destroyed the Vista market. I'm fine with getting W7, I was just hoping Vista was still around at cheaper rates. Hah!

If I was to buy the Upgrade version of Windows 7 (which is outrageously cheaper than full), and just do a normal upgrade, later on if anything happens to my computer to where I need to reformat, would I be able to use the upgrade disc to to reformat and install Windows 7 that way? Or, does it only work if it detects a previous Windows installation?

Thanks guys!

I actually found this same thing on Amazon for a bit more, shortly after posting this thread, but one of the reviews had made mention of something related to you need a support patch from Microsoft that has an additional fee to download.

Do you know if that's true? Or just random smoke blown?

Thanks for the link though, by the way :)

I cannot for the life of me remember the website I seen this, but there is a site out there that sells legitimate win 7 product keys for like 30 dollars or something. Its then a question of buying the disc or getting hold of it somehow.

I don't know if you can still do it with 7, however with Vista, if you ran the upgrade disk without entering a product key to get a 30 day trial, and then ran it again, it tricked the system into thinking it was a full copy for the much cheaper price.

Upgrading also seems a bit futile, you still retain all of your data and such, however because the registry changes none of the program will work and will need reinstalling anyway.
